President Joe Biden works very hard to exude leadership, as seen Tuesday when he expressed condolences to the families of two FBI agents fatally shot while serving a warrant as part of a child pornography and violence against children investigation.
But his choice of words may have cynics wondering if he had former FBI director James Comey in mind when he said the “vast majority” of FBI agents are “decent, honorable people.”
“They put their lives on the line and it’s a hell of a price to pay,” Biden said, speaking from the Oval Office. “Every single day, every single one of these folks get up, and by and large, the vast, vast majority of these men and women are decent honorable people that put their lives on the line and we owe them.”
Saying his heart aches for the families of these FBI special agents, Biden commented on how families of law enforcement officers dread receiving a call that their loved ones have been harmed.
“I was briefed on this tragedy earlier today, and I know the FBI is gathering information about how this happened, what happened, but I can only imagine how these families are feeling today,” the president said. “One of the things, when you are in a combat zone or the military, or you’re an FBI agent, or a police officer, every family just — when they put that shield on and go out in the morning — dreads the possibility of a call — receiving that phone call. And my heart aches for the families.”
Biden added that he had not reached out to the families, “I’ve not had an opportunity, nor will I try today, to contact them.”
Two FBI agents were fatally shot and three agents were wounded as they executed a search warrant early Tuesday in Sunrise, Fla. The subject of the warrant died in the shootout, according to the bureau.
It was the deadliest day for the FBI since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, according to Fox News.
FBI Director Christopher Wray identified the slain agents as Special Agent Daniel Alfin and Special Agent Laura Schwartzenberger.
“Every day, FBI Special Agents put themselves in harm’s way to keep the American people safe,” the director said in a statement. Special Agent Alfin and Special Agent Schwartzenberger exemplified heroism today in defense of their country. The FBI will always honor their ultimate sacrifice and will be forever grateful for their bravery.”
Biden quickly pivoted from the incident to introduce new Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas — joking about how easy a job it is — and signed three new executive orders on immigration and border security, Fox News reported.
Three MORE executives… which undo gains made under the Trump administration and put the United States back in the illegal immigration business.
As for the unprecedented number of executive orders he has signed, Biden tried to justify legislating by fiat by claiming he wasn’t legislating by fiat.
“I want to make clear, there’s a lot of talk, for good reason, about the number of executive orders I’ve signed,” Biden said. “I’m not making new law. I’m eliminating bad policy.”
One order focused on reunifying illegal immigrant families, and another was a review of what is known as the Remain-in-Mexico policy, which Biden has vowed to end. The policy keeps migrants south of the border while their immigration hearings are underway rather than admitting them into the homeland.
“This is about how America is safer, stronger, more prosperous when we have a fair, orderly, and humane legal immigration system,” Biden claimed.
