Ex-CIA officer likens Capitol protesters to 9/11 terrorists, calls for ‘ruthlessly’ hunting down the ‘fascist thugs’

Much like all things in politics these days, the outrage and extreme hyperbole being used to exploit the storming of the U.S. Capitol last month borders on the bizarre.

Beginning with the claim that the protesters were out to overthrow the United States government — to believe this, you must accept that the “QAnon Shaman,” a shirtless man with reported mental health issues, an alleged regular user of psychedelic drugs wearing a horned bearskin headdress, was to assume the mantle of authority.

With the Biden administration declaring war on domestic extremism — no, we’re not talking about Antifa or Black Lives Matter — there’s a push to justify this effort, and a former CIA officer likened the “fascist thugs who attacked our democracy last month” to al-Qaeda, the militant Islamist organization responsible for thousands of deaths.

Keeping in mind that we are talking about American citizens and, in the case of Ashli Babbitt who was shot and killed inside the Capitol, a 16-year Air Force veteran. On that note, investigators announced this week there wasn’t enough evidence to charge the U.S. Capitol Police lieutenant who killed the unarmed woman.

Given how loosely the left applies the “fascist thugs” designation, and a four-year-long media-assisted campaign of demonizing millions of Trump supporters, the direction this is heading is scary.

Former CIA officer Kevin Carroll, a senior counselor to former Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, wrote an op-ed run by the Washington Examiner calling the Capitol riot an “attempted coup d’etat” and even named Republicans as part of the problem.

“We saw five dead in the Jan. 6 attempted coup d’etat,” Carroll said. “We saw possible assassination plots against both former Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. We saw coercion designed to prevent certification of President Biden’s Electoral College victory. We now see the Capitol necessarily secured behind razor wire. But we also see some Republican members of Congress trying to sneak guns onto the House floor. One has even called for violence. It is time to confront these putschists.”

(Putschists is a German term for those who attempt to overthrow a government by force.)

Carroll’s solution is to hunt down those involved in the protest and charge them as harshly as possible.

“We ruthlessly hunted down foreign terrorists after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and must do the same to their domestic equivalents,” he wrote.

Is this a call for drone strikes on Americans, because that’s how the war on terror was carried out.

In addition to this, Carroll called for loyalty pledges for police and fire departments, and widespread government monitoring of social media. He said “use the supremacy of federal law to ban ‘militias’ beyond the National Guard,” and take steps to make it easier to prosecute “domestic terrorists.”

(Can banning the Second Amendment be far behind?)

“We defeated al Qaeda and can do the same to the fascist thugs who attacked our democracy last month. But only if we take similar hard measures against the enemy within,” Carroll concluded.

The trouble is, when talking about the “enemy within,” there’s a great difference of opinion about who the true enemy is.

Case in point, attorney Kurt Schlichter, a retired Army infantry colonel with a degree from the Army War College, said of Carroll: “This guy is the terrorist.”

Schlichter also noted that Carroll was in violation of the very oaths he has taken in both the CIA and the Army:

As egregious as Carroll’s words are, people seemed more peeved at the Washington Examiner for giving him a platform to spew his inciteful rhetoric.
