Republican group launches strategy to stop Stacey Abrams from taking Georgia

Failed 2018 Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams got plenty of credit for not only the Democrat “win” in her state in November, but also for the party sweeping the two January run-off elections, effectively giving Democrats control of the Senate.

Her “community organizing” skills and fundraising success were accredited after a heavy push on absentee ballots in the state, which saw nearly one million more votes in 2020 than in the 2016 election — President Joe Biden won by less than 12,000 votes.

With confidence in the gains realized, Abrams is expected to challenge Gov. Brian Kemp again in 2022, having lost by a little over 54,000 votes. Republican strategists have formed a new outside group to target the Democrat.

The independent group, “Stop Stacey,” said in a statement it will build a “robust state and national fundraising operation” to target Abrams with opposition research, digital ads and other paid media, Fox News reported.

“After losing the White House and United States Senate in 2020, grassroots Republicans across Georgia and America are standing together to stop radical Stacey Abrams,” senior strategist Jeremy Brand emphasized in a statement. “There is no time to waste: We must stand up, fight back, and Stop Stacey.”

The committee said it will work to “unite and mobilize grassroots Republicans,” and uncover Abrams “shady voter groups that undermine election integrity.”

Abrams’ claim to fame before the 2020 election was that she was the first black woman to run for governor in Georgia, and that she refused to concede to Republican opponent and now Governor Kemp in 2018, saying at the time, “I will not concede because the erosion of our democracy is not right.”

She was celebrated in the media for a stance eerily similar to what was seen from former President Donald Trump, who was accused of sedition by these same forces.

Her defiance helped with the celebrity status Abrams has taken on since the election, but the Senate run-off wins sealed the deal, as seen in this tweet from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer:

If Abrams challenges Kemp in 2022, she can expect a heavy assist from her party, the media and liberal celebrities, with her campaign taking on a national feel.

Biden praised Abrams earlier this month, saying “nobody in America has done more” for voting rights and the party.

“Stacey, you’re changing Georgia. You’ve changed America,” the president said at an Atlanta rally.

But the “Stop Stacy” group warned “Abrams is pushing for a total, radical takeover in Georgia and throughout America.”

The group told Fox News that its initial seed money is in the six figures and that they plan to compete with Abrams’ network, which has raised nearly $100 million so far.

“Thanks to her socialist backers and billionaires like George Soros, Stacey Abrams has raised over $100 million to orchestrate a total takeover in the 2022 election,” Brand said. “We will do whatever it takes to expose Stacey Abrams’ radical network, highlight her dangerous agenda, and ultimately defeat her – and her left-wing candidates – at the ballot box.”

Republican losses in the January runoff elections were said to be because Trump supporters did not turn out, in part because the former president insisted that the November election was wrought with fraud.

Trump accused Kemp of striking a deal with Abrams that made it more difficult to check signatures on mail-in ballots and called on the GOP governor to resign.

In a tweet, Trump called Kemp “an obstructionist who refuses to admit that we won Georgia.”

Speaking at a rally on the eve of the Georgia Senate runoffs, he vowed to campaign against Kemp in 2022, according to Fox News.

“I’ll be here in about a year and a half campaigning against your governor,” Trump said. “I guarantee that.”
