Disney’s Mandalorian star Gina Carano is being punished for her political opinions

Op-ed views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

The online cancel culture is apparently still trying to pressure Lucasfilm and Disney to fire or replace actress Gina Carano for occasionally expressing right-of-center views. Real-life martial artist Carano stars as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, a popular show in the Star Wars canon that streams on Disney+. An unconfirmed report separately indicates that Disney wants her to apologize for whatever left-wing Twitter is offended about.

The hashtag #FireGinaCarano that has trended on Twitter periodically is all about politics and has nothing to do with the quality of her performance in the role. Unfortunately, corporate America is spending way too much time listening to woke activists on social media.

Some fans of the show are accusing her, without evidence, of backing the universally condemned riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

“It is certainly worth noting that the Star Wars actress has not actually posted anything supporting [the] rioters. She has, however, ‘liked’ several Tweets posted by apparent riot supporters — this is what has caused fans to begin using the #FireGinaCarano hashtag again, particularly in response to Disney’s official statement,” Inside the Magic reported.

The Disney CEO, like many of his virtue-signaling counterparts, felt the need to issue a redundant statement denouncing the inexcusable chaos at the Capitol, again which the entire country has condemned, and for which hundreds of lawbreakers face prosecution.

The above-referenced website also claims that “Disney’s latest commissioned artwork for The Mandalorian does not showcase her, one of the show’s lead characters,” which — if accurate — is not a good sign.

Although Carano’s own Twitter feed has been free of political commentary lately, speculation has mounted that the producers will hand the Dune role to another actress or just write Carano’s character out of the show and its planned spinoffs entirely.

In the alternative, #WeLoveCaraDune and #IStandWithGinaCarano has also trended recently.

In November 2020, Carano mocked Democrat elected officials on Twitter for their inconsistent edicts about face masks: “Democratic government leaders now recommend we all wear blindfolds along with masks so we can’t see what’s really going on.”

That same month, she issued a tweet for a common-sense cleaning up the election process including a requirement for voter ID. Before Big Tech de-platformed it, Carano encouraged her followers to join her on Parler, perhaps anticipating that her account might be suspended.

Tolerant, inclusive Hollywood expects everyone to march in ideological lockstep. Anyone either in front or behind the camera who publicly expresses a conservative-sounding view is apt to wind up on the unemployment line, unless they are so far along in their career — such as Ray Donovan star Jon Voight — that the cancel culture is rendered irrelevant.

Ironically, Hollywood is still obsessed with the 1950s blacklist, yet it is aggressively enforcing one of its own.

As an aside, conservatives either put politics on the back burner when consuming entertainment, i.e., separating the art from the artist, or simply change the channel. The left seems incapable of exercising that kind of free choice in the marketplace.
