President Donald Trump is preparing to release a “massive trove” of documents definitively showing that the Russian collusion story was leaked weeks before the 2016 election as a means of counteracting Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s then-burgeoning email scandal.
The documents, which are set for release as early as Friday, “include FBI interviews and human source evaluation reports for two of the main informants in the Russia case, former MI6 agent Christopher Steele and academic Stefan Halper,” Just the News founder John Solomon reported.
The number of documents President Trump has authorized declassified and released are said to be a foot high, Solomon added.
They include internal Justice Department and FBI memos and other documents that reveal “significant flaws” in the Russian collusion probe “and provide a detailed timeline of when the FBI first realized the Steele dossier was problematic,” Solomon reported, citing “multiple” U.S. officials.
Among the more devastating revelations is an admission by former British spy Christopher Steele that he broke his confidential human source agreement with the bureau by leaking dossier contents to the news media in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 8, 2016 election.
He said he did so in order to shift the news narrative away from reports that Clinton may have illegally exposed classified information by utilizing a home-based email server that was neither protected nor approved by the government during her stint as secretary of state for President Obama.
Steele was hired by the Clinton campaign’s law firm, Perkins Coie, to try and find evidence linking then-GOP nominee Donald J. Trump to Russian government influence. Steele told the FBI in the fall of 2017 he had two clients at the time — the bureau and Clinton — and he chose to pursue the interests of her instead.
“Steele told the bureau that then-FBI Director James Comey’s decision to reopen the Clinton email probe in fall 2016 triggered him to leak his dossier details in what he described as a taking-the-gloves-off moment,” Solomon reported.
The FBI’s interview summary clarifies that Steele was not only allied with Clinton but was opposed to Trump and believed that his presidency would be detrimental to his homeland of Britain, which spurred him to leak.
While it’s been known for nearly a year that Steele did indeed leak contents of the dossier to the media, his motivation for doing so remained hidden from the public, remained classified, and is believed to be among documents President Trump is ordering to be released.
In recent months, the Trump Administration declassified documents indicating the CIA warned President Obama and the FBI that its operatives had intercepted information that Clinton herself personally ordered an intelligence operation that sought to “vilify” her Republican opponent with the false collusion story so as to distract from her email scandal.
The documents declassified by Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe revealed that then-CIA Director John Brennan, a frequent Trump critic, briefed Obama about the Clinton plan. Former acting DNI Richard Grenell wrote on Twitter the documents were “proof” Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden “directed their administration to use the powers of government to attack” the 2016 Trump campaign.
Several subsequent investigations disproved the Steele dossier. U.S. intelligence officials believe much of what was contained in it was likely Russian disinformation.
The mass declassification would come as President Trump prepares to leave office ahead of Biden’s inauguration on Tuesday.
