McConnell mum over reports he backs Dems’ impeachment efforts, base warns GOP ‘will cease to exist’

There’s no shortage of reports that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has concluded that President Trump committed impeachable offenses and supports Democrats moving to initiate impeachment proceedings.

While the now-standard anonymous sources have said so, the one person who hasn’t spoken up is McConnell himself.

With Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., vowing to bring articles of impeachment to the House floor for consideration on Wednesday morning, the Senate leader is “furious” with Trump after last week’s protest at the U.S. Capitol that got out of hand and does not see this as a partisan exercise like the previous sham impeachment effort, Fox News reported.

McConnell is also said to be angry over the loss of both seats in last week’s Senate runoff elections in Georgia, costing him the majority in the upper chamber.

House Democrats will charge Trump with violating his oath of office, saying that the president “engaged in high Crimes and Misdemeanors by inciting violence against the Government of the United States.”

The single article of impeachment refers to Trump saying at a rally before the Capitol was stormed: “If you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

McConnell reportedly told associates that impeachment will help rid the Republican Party of Trump and his movement, according to Fox News.

Axios took the matters a step further, reporting that there’s “a better than 50-50 chance that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would vote to convict President Trump in an impeachment trial.”

Laura Ingraham said on her show Tuesday night that Fox News “has confirmed that while he’s not said whether he supports conviction in the Senate, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is not going to stand in the way of this impeachment effort and is said to be done with Trump.”

She also shared a tweet quoting a GOP donor saying the party “will cease to exist” if McConnell goes along with impeachment:

Host Sean Hannity said on his show, which airs before The Ingraham Angle, that he spoke with McConnell’s office about a New York Times story that the GOP leader was pleased about impeachment and sees it as a means to purge Trump from the party.

Hannity said, “They said no, there are no conclusions that have been made and there’s a lot of salacious nonsense in this.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., chair of the House Republican Conference, gave Democrats a boost when the third-ranked House GOP leader announced that she will vote to impeach Trump.

The media was all but orgasmic in reporting on the development, but then, CNN has made anti-Trump Republicans a cottage industry.

“The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled this mob, and lit the flame of this attack,” Cheney claimed in a release. “Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President.”

“There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution,” she would conclude. “I will vote to impeach the President.”

Another GOP lawmaker, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, also announced that he will vote to impeach Trump — being rabidly anti-Trump, his declaration carried far less weight.

Suffice it to say, folks on the right are less than pleased with the reports of McConnell allegedly leaning toward impeachment.
