House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was given a platform Sunday night on 60 Minutes to make a case for impeaching President Donald Trump over the U.S. Capitol being breached last week in a protest that got out of hand, though host Leslie Stahl did challenge the Democrat over an eight-month stimulus relief delay.
Claiming Republicans mischaracterize her willingness to “compromise,” the speaker rambled on about there being “no respect for our heroes” as the reason she held out.
“What about the Covid relief package, that was held up eight months,” Stahl said, looking Pelosi in the eye.
“But that was their obstruction,” Pelosi shot back, speaking of the Republican Party.
“No. Yours too,” Stahl countered, surprisingly.
Again, Pelosi insisted she did not obstruct, saying it was the GOP, prompting Stahl to say, “You held out for eight months.”
After just saying she didn’t hold up the stimulus checks, Pelosi admitted that she did, spewing bizarre talking points about “no respect for our heroes,” which appeared to be a nod to labor unions.
“No, no. We held it up because there was no respect for our heroes,” Speaker Pelosi said. “Our state and local health-care workers, police and fire, first responders, our sanitation, transportation, food-workers, our teachers, our teachers, our teachers — they would not go down that path.”
Stahl noted that there was a member of the Democratic caucus who said, “We look like obstructionists, and it was a mistake.”
But Pelosi was adamant that holding desperately-needed relief from the American people for eight months “wasn’t a mistake.”
“Well, I don’t remember anybody saying that, but they may have,” she snapped. “But it wasn’t a mistake and I would not — and nobody expects me to — to support something that solidifies injustice in our country.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was clear back in December that the Democrats were to blame.
“I said back in July what the country needed was a package roughly of a trillion dollars focused on kids in school, small businesses, health care providers, and direct cash payments,” McConnell said, according to Fox News. “We started advocating that in July and August. The talks were unproductive, so I essentially put that bill on the floor of the Senate in both September and October. Not a single Democrat supported it. Their view was, give us everything we want or we won’t give you anything.”
“It’s noteworthy that at the end they finally gave us what we could have agreed to back in July,” the GOP leader continued. “I think what held it up was, they did not want to do anything before the presidential election. I think they felt that would disadvantage the president.”
It’s also worth noting that in early October, President Trump called on Congress to send him a standalone bill to get relief checks out to the American people ahead of the holiday season — Pelosi was a firm no on that offer.
