A federal excessive force investigation has been opened by the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia into the death of Ashli Babbitt, the 35-year-old unarmed Trump supporter who was shot and killed inside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.
Graphic video captured an unidentified police officer on the other side of a barricaded door shooting Babbitt, a 14-year Air Force veteran, as she attempts to climb through a broken window.
U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin also opened a homicide investigation into the death of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who succumbed to injuries sustained “while physically engaging with protesters.”
Video footage showed three law enforcement officers on the same side of the doorway as the protesters, with one of the officers standing in front of the window that Babbitt tried to enter. The cops are not being accosted by the mob, but suddenly move way from the door, retreating down a stairwell through the crowd and that’s when Babbitt tried to climb through the window.
The New York Times did a piece on who Babbitt was — the headline alone dissuading you from thinking it was the type of flowing article frequently seen when a criminal is shot by police about how the person was an upstanding citizen working against all odds to turn their life around.
“Woman Killed in Capitol Embraced Trump and QAnon,” the headline blared, as the article detailed Babbitt’s struggles after getting out of the Air Force.
The Times reported that the “relatively low-ranking senior airman” was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, but highlighted that her husband’s former girlfriend applied for a protection order against her — without offering much context.
The newspaper also reported that Babbitt “took out a costly short-term business loan” for her pool business, adding “within days of signing the loan agreement, she stopped making payments” and was sued by the lender.
This kind of crack reporting about a deceased woman — a woman who did not pose an imminent threat to anyone’s life.
Conservative commentator Matt Walsh was quick to note the double standard at play with Babbitt.
Weird that when I look at the headlines about Ashli Babbit, none of them describe her as “unarmed,” though she was. Usually “unarmed” is the first thing the media tells us when there’s a police shooting. But not in this case. I wonder why.

Another phrase not heard once last week was “mostly peaceful,” which the corrupt media repeated ad nauseam while Black Lives Matter rioters burned American cities.
In a follow up tweet, Walsh questioned “how it could have been necessary to kill the woman. She was unarmed, climbing through a window. They couldn’t push her back or take her down and cuff her? Why did they have to shoot her?”
Her brother, Roger Witthoeft, explained his sibling’s likely motivation to the Times.
“My sister was 35 and served 14 years — to me that’s the majority of your conscious adult life,” Witthoeft said. “If you feel like you gave the majority of your life to your country and you’re not being listened to, that is a hard pill to swallow. That’s why she was upset.”
As for questions of justice for Babbitt, it’s important to understand that the federal investigation into the shooting is “routine procedure,” according to Associated Press reporter Mike Balsamo.
The Justice Dept. says the Metropolitan Police Dept. is conducting an investigation into the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbit during the Capitol riot & emphasizes it is routine procedure for any fatal officer-involved shooting in DC. The U.S. attorney’s office is overseeing probe.

The same folks on the left who spent much of last year demonizing police and calling for them to be defunded are now defending the officer’s actions and claiming Babbitt “deserved” to be killed. Influenced by the media’s dishonest narrative that a protest that got out of hand was an “insurrection” — it was not — some are even cheering her death.
Why?
Aside from being conservative, and a Trump supporter, Walsh stated the harsh truth.
“If Ashli Babbit wasn’t white, they would be painting murals of her face and rioting on her behalf,” Walsh tweeted. “Instead they ignore her death or celebrate it. That’s the truth. We all know it.”
*And wasn’t conservative
