Christian conservative actress Patricia Heaton shared some poignant words of advice on Twitter this Friday to all “common sense” Christians who feel lost amid the societal turmoil that’s plagued America for months on end.

“If you’re a common sense person, you probably don’t feel you have a home in this world right now. If you’re a Christian, you know you were never meant to,” she wrote.

The tweet up was up to almost 45,000 likes and 8,000 retweets by Sunday morning.

Her stirring words were based on a litany of passages from the Christian Bible that speak of how life here on Earth is just a phase or a step on a long journey that eventually ends in what Christians refer to as heaven.

Below are just a few of the many passages that reference a greater world beyond the confines of this oftentimes gloomy planet:

• Philippians 3:20 ESV: “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
• Hebrews 13:14 ESV: “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.”
• John 18:36 ESV: “Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.'”
• John 2:15-17 ESV: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
• Romans 12:1-2 ESV: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

The underlying point is to not become too enmeshed in the petty, mindless turmoil and havoc of this world and to instead focus on spiritual enlightenment by pursuing the behavior and mindset that lead to salvation.

Of course, this is easier said than done. If you’re a church-going believer living a righteous life, and suddenly a blue tyrant stomps into your church and shuts it down, then it’s certainly harder to just brush off the madness — but you must nonetheless.

None of this means you can’t partake in the joys of life on Earth. Not at all, as Heaton herself explained in the follow-up tweet below:

The key, according to Christian theology, is to remember the distinction between temporary and forever — and to avoid becoming unhealthily attached or focused on both the Earthly pleasures and the Earthly pains of a physical existence.
