Chicago police union chief comes out swinging against narrative Capitol chaos was an ‘insurrection’

At the center of Wednesday’s protest in Washington, D.C. that got out of hand, is that millions of Americans have lost faith in the integrity of our elections — agree or not, that’s a huge representation of the country and while the corrupt media continues to attack this segment of our society, it doesn’t change how they feel or the ramifications of those beliefs.

Fearful of the backlash, few are willing to say as much, but John Catanzara, president of Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, is one who understands the frustration behind what is being billed as a “riot” at the U.S. Capitol, WBEZ reported.

While compromising the seat of the U.S. government is concerning — and more of a testament to how poorly prepared Capitol Police were — the actions Wednesday pale in comparison to a summer of rioting from Black Lives Matter, where many cities, to include D.C., were looted and burned. Never mind that the media outrage machine continues to characterize this week’s protest as an insurrection, an attempt to overthrow the government.

“There was no arson, there was no burning of anything, there was no looting, there was very little destruction of property,” Catanzara said. “It was a bunch of pissed-off people that feel an election was stolen, somehow, some way.”

Speaking with WBEZ in a phone interview, the union chief repeated a belief millions hold, that the presidential election results are an insult to both their intelligence and common sense — lack of evidence notwithstanding.

“I don’t have any doubt that something shady happened in this election,” Catanzara insisted. “You’re not going to convince me that many people voted for Joe Biden. Never for the rest of my life will you ever convince me of that. But, again, it still comes down to proof.”

“Evidence matters,” he added. “Until that appears, shame on them for what they did, but it was out of frustration. There’s no fights. There’s no, obvious, violence in this crowd. They pushed past security and made their way to the Senate chamber. Did they destroy anything when they were there? No.”

The Trump campaign had weeks to produce a smoking gun to support its claims of voter fraud and failed in that endeavor. Meanwhile, the same media that campaigned against the president throughout the election cycle worked just as hard to dispel any notion that there were any irregularities, repeating the “no evidence” mantra ad nauseam.

As for Catanzara saying there was no violence, there were clashes with police, and an interview was held Wednesday evening before it was announced late Thursday that a U.S. Capitol Police officer died.

According to a statement, Officer Brian D. Sicknick died at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET Thursday “due to injuries sustained while on-duty.”

The release said the officer succumbed to injuries sustained Wednesday but did not detail those injuries.

“Officer Sicknick was responding to the riots on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol and was injured while physically engaging with protesters. He returned to his division office and collapsed. He was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” the statement said.

In addition to the officer’s death, an unarmed female Trump supporter, Ashli Babbitt, 35, a 14-year Air Force veteran, was shot and killed inside the U.S. Capitol, apparently by a Capitol Police officer.

In comparison, there were 25 deaths during the BLM riots and related political unrest, according to The Guardian.

With the BLM riots in mind, Catanzara said Wednesday’s mayhem was “very different than what happened all across this country all summer long in Democratic-run cities and nobody had a problem with that.”

The union chief said the focus at the time was “blaming the police and the police’s response to the violence, looting, and criminal behavior.”

“If the worst crime here is trespassing, so be it. But to call these people treasonous is beyond ridiculous and ignorant,” Catanzara said of Wednesday’s protesters.

He further explained what was driving those involved, save for a few Antifa instigators who may or may not have been mixed in.

“They’re individuals. They get to do what they want,” he opined. “Again, they were voicing frustration. They’re entitled to voice their frustration. They clearly have been ignored and they’re still being ignored as if they’re lunatics and treasonous now, which is beyond stupid.”

Right on cue, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who defended BLM rioters, responded to the interview to regurgitate the established media narrative.

“This wasn’t “frustration.” It was a violent insurrection,” the Democrat said in a tweet. “The comments by John Catanzara, Chicago FOP President, either demonstrate clear delusion or reckless disrespect for the rule of law—or both.”

Catanzara also noted that the media played a role in disenfranchising these voters.

“It’s a whole side of the argument and, primarily, your profession is at the root of it, basically championing Joe Biden the whole time,” he said of the news media.
