Georgia GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler rescinded her objection to electors from key battleground states that were certified for President-elect Joe Biden, a few days after pledging to do so.
“The events that have transpired today have forced me to reconsider and I cannot now, in good conscience, object to the certification of these electors,” Loeffler said Wednesday after hundreds of people stormed the U.S. Capitol Building following a rally in support of President Donald Trump.
“The violence, the lawlessness, and siege of the halls of Congress are abhorrent and stand as a direct attack on the very institution my objection was intended to protect, the sanctity of the American democratic process,” she continued.
Loeffler lost her run-off race against Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock on Tuesday, as did her state and colleague Sen. David Perdue, who was defeated by Jon Ossoff.
Loeffler went on to say on the floor of the Senate that she still believes there were “serious irregularities that resulted not only in too many Americans losing confidence in our elections but in the power of the ballot as a tool of democracy.”
She also noted that she understood that many Americans simply believe the electoral system is “unfair.”
“Nevertheless, there is no excuse for the events that took place in these chambers today,” Loeffler noted further, adding that “this body” must work to restore Americans’ confidence in their democratic processes.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) also announced that she too would rescind her objection after becoming one of the first to sign onto the effort, which was led by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.).

On Sunday during a rally in Dalton, Ga., with President Trump, Loeffler told the crowd she had made the decision to join about a dozen other GOP senators in objecting to the electoral votes.
“We’re gonna get this done,” she said to raucous cheers.
On Wednesday as both chambers of Congress were meeting to certify the electors for Biden, groups of people in Washington to attend a pro-Trump rally broke away from the main crowd of attendees, blasting through barriers and police lines in a rush to the Capitol Building.
Videos showed rioters breaking out windows and fighting Capitol police officers inside the building.
A few extremists entered congressional offices and the Senate chamber. At one point, shots were fired inside the building, striking and killing Ashli Babbitt, a 14-year Air Force veteran and a staunch supporter of the president, Fox News reported. As of this writing, it’s not clear who fired the shots.
As protesters made their way through the Capitol, authorities inside the building were forced to draw their weapons.
In an interview with Fox 5 DC, her husband, who was not named in the report, said the two of them owned a business in San Diego.
Her mother-in-law, who was also not named, told the station, “I really don’t know why she decided to do this.”
The vast majority of people who attended the DC rally behaved peacefully, reports noted.
Several Republicans were quick to denounce the violence.
“This is not the direction we should go,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said.
President Trump himself also repeatedly urged protesters to remain peaceful.
“I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful,” he wrote on Twitter before the platform suspended him for 12 hours. “No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!”

The platform also removed a video in which the president urged protesters to remain calm and respect law enforcement, while also repeating his claim that he won the election.
