Despite the ‘BS’ bluster, every member of ‘The Squad’ voted to keep Nancy Pelosi as Speaker

Every member of the so-called “Squad,” a small group of far-left Democratic lawmakers, voted to reelect Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House on Sunday, despite previously questioning her leadership and suggesting that new ones are needed for the party.

“Well, you know, I think when you look at the razor-thin margin … We are just an extremely slim amount of votes away from risking the speakership to the Republican party and this is, it’s, it’s bigger than any one of us and that is consequential,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who has clashed with Pelosi in the past and has been very vocal about wanting to see her replaced, told reporters following her vote.

“But I also think it’s important that we realize that what kind of communities, which communities and all of the communities that, that creates Democratic power,” she added.

“AOC,” as she is also known, was mocked online for what many saw as an act of hypocrisy in supporting the California Democrat.

Last month, left-wing activists including radio host Jimmy Dore implored Ocasio-Cortez and others in her small group to at least negotiate for votes on so-called ‘progressive’ priorities including Medicare For All.

“Progressives in congress CAN actually force a Med4all vote if they withhold their vote for Pelosi as speaker to do it,” Dore noted online Dec. 2. “I ask all progressives to pressure ur favorite progressive congressperson to withhold their Vote 4 Pelosi & demand a Med4all vote!”

He added: “The Plan that is BEST for Everyone is MEDICARE FOR ALL. 15 million Americans have lost there (sic) jobs and don’t have money to purchase insurance from your DONORS,” Dore added later, tagging Ocasio-Cortez. “Pressure your progressive representative to WITHHOLD THEIR VOTE UNTIL PELOSI HOLDS MED4ALL VOTE IN HOUSE!”

“I’m enjoying @jimmy_dore putting House progressives on the spot on how they aren’t demanding anything in return for giving Pelosi their vote for Speaker. He’s pointing out they have not organized a coherent political agenda,” Matt Stoller of the American Economic Liberties Project, a leftist organization, added.

“Progressives should either become a coherent independent Eem faction or fully embrace what they effectively are, a loyal supportive faction of Democrats with no independent policy goals.”

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper in late October, Ocasio-Cortez refused to say whether she would support Pelosi’s reelection if Democrats held onto the House.

“I want to make sure that we win the House,” she responded. “I do believe that we will, but it’s critically important that we are supporting Democrats in tight swing races, making sure that not only all of them come back but that we grow our majority.”

In fact, Democrats lost ground in last month’s elections, much to the chagrin of party members who did not support Pelosi’s reelection.

They include Reps. Abigail Spanberger (Virginia) and Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, both of whom voted “Present.”

Days after the Nov. 3 election, Spanberger went off during a conference call with party members, blaming the losses on the promotion of far-left policies like defunding police and the Green New Deal.

“The number one concern that people brought to me was defunding the police, and I’ve heard from colleagues that it’s the language of the streets and we should respect that. We’re in Congress, and we’re professionals,” Spanberger said, according to the Washington Post.

“We are supposed to talk about things in a way where we mean what we’re talking about. If we don’t mean we’re defunding the police, we shouldn’t say that. So when … people in our communities are concerned, we need to recognize that is on us,” she said.

Spanberger noted further that “no one should say ‘defund the police’ ever again” and “nobody should be talking about socialism.” She said if Democrats didn’t get that message the party will “get f–king torn apart” in 2022.

For her part, Pelosi took credit for her party retaining control of the House, despite having a much smaller majority.
