Amid a pandemic that shows no signs of letting up anytime soon, even as a vaccine is rolled out, and deep concerns about election integrity that tear at the very fabric of our republic, which is based on free and fair elections, Americans are obsessed with whether or not Alec Baldwin’s wife is Spanish.
And considering that Hilaria Baldwin herself seems to be confused, the one certainty here is that you’d better be politically correct when responding.
Just ask Ireland Baldwin — this being the daughter Alec called a “rude, thoughtless little pig” when she was just 11-years-old — who weighed in to support her mother-in-law, only to misapply the left’s made up term “Latinx.”
“I simply want to say this and then nothing more,” the daughter said in a statement shared online. “I am fully supportive of any individual of the Latinx community. I will continue to listen and learn. But I also feel defensive when misinformation spreads regarding my family. I will do better. … At the same time, I hope that people can start getting information from credible sources.”
The problem being that “Latinx” applies to those with Latin American heritage, and her stepmother, who reportedly went by Hillary Hayword-Thomas while being raised in Weston, Massachusetts, is allegedly Spanish.
Hilaria Baldwin’s bio on her agency’s speakers site says she was born in Mallorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, and she had told “Motherhood, Marriage & Miscarriages” in April that she moved to New York from Spain when she was 19 to attend NYU.
However, in responding to the controversy in an Instagram video, Mrs. Baldwin said, “There’s been some questions about where I’m born, I’m born in Boston. I spent some of my childhood in Boston, some of my childhood in Spain.”
Ireland Baldwin scratched the offending message and posted a lengthy statement on Instagram.
“Like I mentioned yesterday, I do love my step mom very much. I think she’s a strong, kind, and a caring human being,” she said. “Without saying anything further on all of this, I think it is her business and not my own to discuss her family background and answer your questions.”
After thanking social justice warriors for calling attention to her misapplication of a made up word, she added: “I really appreciate the Instagram friends in my DMs who have been very open and honestly having discussions about cultural appropriation, the right terms to address their communities, and sharing with me ways that I can do better.”

Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin remains as volatile as ever, as seen when the 62-year-old actor responded to a disparaging comment online.
On Tuesday, he shared a Mark Twain quote to his Instagram page, presumably in response to the controversy over his wife’s heritage: “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”
“Like your wife being Spanish when she lived In Massachusetts her entire life. I take it her accent is fake as well? FRAUDS!” a social media user replied.
The comment was liked over 1,000 times and prompted Baldwin to fire back, “Go f— yourself.”
Baldwin posted a bizarre, rambling eight and half minute rant about social media on Sunday after a social media user posted an exhaustive thread questioning his wife’s Spanish heritage and accent, that seems to come and go.
(Hilaria explained in her video message she has a tendency to mix the languages: “If I start to get nervous or upset, I start to mix the two. And this is something I’ve always been a little insecure about.”)
Calling Twitter “a vast orchard of crap,” he went off on the social media platform.
“We live in a world now where we’re hidden behind the anonymity of social media. People feel that they can say anything, Baldwin said. “No profile picture very often — sometimes yes — no identifying features there, hidden behind the anonymity of social media, they want to just shoot it all over you and spray it all over you, their venom and their hate.”
“There’s things that have been said lately about people that I love, that I care about deeply, which are ridiculous,” he added.
Baldwin took to Twitter to defend his wife, while lecturing People’s editorial assistant Ale Russian on accents.
Russian, a Venezuelan immigrant, shared an essay she penned “explaining why it’s hurtful to see Hilaria (Hillary) Baldwin gain success with a fake exaggerated accent while so many immigrants, especially POC, are ostracized, marginalized and ridiculed for the same.”

On that note, there’s an awkward video clip of Baldwin telling David Letterman that his wife is “from Spain” while mocking her supposed Spanish accent.
