President Donald Trump is predicting that U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.Dak.) will face a career-ending primary challenge, but the state’s extremely popular governor Kristi Noem says she won’t be the one to do it in 2022. Noem has confirmed that she is seeking a second term as the state’s chief executive.
On Twitter, Trump blasted “RINO” and “Mitch’s Boy” Thune for supposedly being dismissive of Sen.-elect Tommy Tuberville’s plan to contest the Electoral College results on January 6, among with GOP House members such as Mo Brooks, Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor-Greene, and others.
“Republicans in the Senate so quickly forget. Right now they would be down 8 seats without my backing them in the last Election. RINO John Thune, ‘Mitch’s boy’, should just let it play out. South Dakota doesn’t like weakness. He will be primaried in 2022, political career over!!!,” the president wrote about what he evidently considers disloyalty based on the POTUS’s belief that he enabled GOP control of the chamber.
According to a CNN reporter in a series tweets embedded below, Thune evidently thinks it’s time to move on and accept Joe Biden as the incoming president, which apparently prompted the president to boldly weigh in today in his unique style.
As an aside, Thune’s thought process might be considered interesting or perhaps even consistent in that in he lost his first attempt to enter the U.S. Senate by around 500 votes, a 2002 general election in which vote fraud may have been in play.

Thune didn’t challenge that outcome, perhaps anticipating that he would run (and win) two years later against Tom Daschle, the-then Democrat Minority Leader.
As alluded to above, Kristi Noem formally indicated on social media that she wouldn’t run against her friend in a Republican primary even though she would be a formidable candidate for a federal office.
Parenthetically, as a general principle, friendship in politics is often transactional and temporal, but it would nonetheless be difficult for anyone to unseat a longtime GOP senator in the very red Mt. Rushmore State.

Outside of the corporate media, Gov. Noem, a rancher and former congresswoman, has won praise and developed a national profile for balancing public health with the economic and psychological well-being of her constituents during the COVID pandemic.
This included rejecting strict lockdowns while keeping her state open for business during the pandemic with various safety protocols in place.

Sen. John Thune may not have watched President Trump’s address in which he concisely outlined the reasons why he (and by extension, his allies) has vowed to pursue all legal and constitutional options to dispute what he considers a rigged election.
