Fox News host Tucker Carlson ripped a decision by “ideologues” on government health panel for not prioritizing the vaccination of older Americans against COVID-19 because they “are too white to save.”
In his opening monologue Monday, Carlson led off by noting that his program was among the first to report on a “mysterious new virus” emanating from China, which was soon identified as COVID-19.
Since then, he said, most people around the world have been waiting for a vaccine, adding that two have been approved this month — one from Pfizer and another from Moderna.
He went on to say that the rapid development of the two vaccines has left many Americans skeptical about their safety, but also noted that “the worry goes deeper than that.”
“The concern isn’t simply the vaccine, it’s the people in charge of the vaccine and their basic moral rottenness,” he said.
Carlson said that “ideologues” are going to be in charge of rolling out the vaccine, which ought to “make you nervous.”
Noting that at present, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is debating how best to begin distributing the vaccines which will “determine who lives and who dies.”
That’s “a big decision” that “shouldn’t be complicated.”
The host explained that based on the health agency’s models, “the way to save the most Americans” is to ensure front-line health workers and people over the age of 65 are given first dibs, adding that British government officials are “getting the vaccine to the elderly as quickly as they can.”
“But in this country, a panel of ideologues at the CDC has decided that the elderly should not be at the front of the line. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has made a different determination, and the reasoning is simple: Old people in this country are too White to save. They even put it in writing,” he said.
Carlson went on to say that the CDC’s Vaccine Advisory Committee “unanimously approved recommendations” from Dr. Kathleen Dooling, who said in a presentation that “racial and ethnic minority groups [are] under-represented [sic] among adults” who are 65 and over.
As such, the host said, “the elderly should not be a top priority.”
The panel also agreed that others officially classified as “non-healthcare essential workers” who should also be vaccinated first consist of “racial and ethnic minority groups” which are “disproportionately represented in many essential industries.”
“In other words, it’s entirely racial. They’re making the decision based on race. Kathleen Dooling’s presentation concluded that doling out life-saving medicine on the basis of skin color would ‘mitigate health inequities,’” Carlson said.
“Of course it would kill people, and she effectively concedes that. But the people it would kill come from a disfavored race, so it’s not a big deal,” he added.
Carlson went on to cite additional, similar recommendations including one from Harald Schmidt, a leading expert on medical ethics and vaccination at the University of Pennsylvania.
Schmidt told the CDC: “Older populations are whiter. [sic] Society is structured in a way that enables them to live longer. Instead of giving additional health benefits to those who already have more of them, we can start to level the playing field a bit.”
“In this case,” Carlson continued, “‘level the playing field’ means intentionally cause people’s deaths because they’re the wrong color.”
He then quoted Marc Lipsitch, a Harvard epidemiologist, who said he doesn’t think teachers should be included in the non-healthcare essential workers.
“Teachers have middle-class salaries, are very often white, and they have college degrees,” he told The New York Times, Carlson noted.
“What the hell is going on? Talk like that from the people in charge makes the population highly paranoid and fearful about the future, and it should. In California, the governor has already announced the state will distribute medicine based on how people look,” said the host.
He played a clip of Gov. Gavin Newsom saying the state would ensure “black and brown communities disproportionately are benefitted” with vaccines “because of the impact they have felt disproportionately because of COVID-19.”
“So certain ethnicities will get the vaccine first because of their ethnicity, says the governor of California, and it doesn’t matter if that policy winds up killing more people or is not based in science,” said Carlson. “Because it’s not based in science. In fact, maybe that’s the point. It’ll level the playing field.”
“The case they’re making is when you’re the right color, you’re essential, and that makes sense, considering that increasingly your color is your essence. It’s the most important thing about you. In this case, it can determine whether you live or die. That’s the country they are creating,” he said, adding: “So, is it any wonder that this vaccine rollout makes people nervous?”
