Add Christmas lights to the list of things that Social Justice advocates want to cancel.
A homeowner in suburban Minneapolis has received an anonymous letter that claimed “twinkling, colorful lights are a reminder of systemic biases against our neighbors who don’t celebrate Christmas or who can’t afford to put up lights of their own.”
The two-paragraph letter addressed to a homeowner in St. Anthony, Minn., which was posted to Twitter by Crime Watch Mpls, goes on to maintain that such “outward-facing displays” can have a “harmful impact” in the community, which must come together to address “institutional inequities.”
Traditional Christmas lights usually don’t bother normal people, and generally are a harmless, fun part of the season — along with inflatable Santas, reindeer, and snowmen — which can be enjoyed by everyone, including those who don’t celebrate the holiday. Many families love to jump in the car and seek out the best displays.
Even when these decorations border on the ostentatious, what’s the harm, other than to the homeowner’s electric bill?
Moreover, Crime Watch MPls also posted a picture of what purports to be the residence in question, which ironically has a modest display compared to many other light shows.
On one hand, the anonymous letter reads like it’s a prank or a parody of the tolerance-preaching woke cohort that attributes the ills of society on systemic facets. If this is meant to be taken seriously, however, a new front has perhaps opened in the so-called rhetorical war on Christmas.

This apparent attempt at Christmas-light shaming prompted a huge response on Twitter. Here is a sample:
The Happy Holidays postmark is icing on the cake. 😆😆

I celebrate Hanukkah. People are sick and bored because of the pandemic. Put up lights.

I’m a Muslim and don’t celebrate Christmas. I wish I knew this home owner so I can help them put on more Christmas lights. These nut jobs do not speak for people like me and others.

😂 ppl lost it. Love the lights and the holiday spirit whatever you celebrate. It is about the good in all of us and celebrating that. I was just thinking I need more next year then read this. Definitely need more. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all!

The recipient should make his house visible from space.

So the car in my driveway might offend my neighbor if it’s out of their price range, or a truck that might be a symbol of hate, or a color that signifies something, or a model that isn’t green enough? FYI: My lights are on, and everybody has to drive by. Merry Xmas! pic.twitter.com/MJ9BmpYabC

I’d be getting a second mortgage and hiring whatever company could add decorations the fastest, while guaranteeing my electric bill would double.

That’s like walking into a bar on Superbowl Sunday and ordering them to turn off the tv because you, personally, don’t like football.

“We are inclusive and tolerant – Of those we include and tolerate”.

This is absurd. If they want to put up decorations in their own yard of whatever tradition they want, in any time of year, they are welcome to.
