In addition to being qualified in the field of matrimony, having been married three times, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., also fancies herself an expert on the Logan Act.
In what has proven to be a common theme among the radical left, Omar came to the defense of former CIA director John Brennan after the liberal ideologue criticized the death of an Iranian scientist behind the Islamic Republic’s military nuclear program.
Calling the shooting “a criminal act” that was “highly reckless,” Brennan tweeted a little advice to the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism: “Iranian leaders would be wise to wait for the return of responsible American leadership on the global stage & to resist the urge to respond against perceived culprits.”
Journalist Glenn Greenwald responded to that tweet by referencing the “abusive” treatment of former national security adviser Mike Flynn, asking if the FBI “should investigate Brennan for Logan Act violations? ”
This, ironically, is *exactly* the message that Flynn gave to Russia during the 2016 transition — hey, guys, don’t get crazy with retaliation: wait until we’re in power shortly and things will be different.
Maybe the FBI should investigate Brennan for Logan Act violations? https://t.co/W6ltqKpsw9

Responding to criticism, Greenwald tweeted the Logan Act is “about undermining current US foreign policy – it doesn’t matter in the slightest if you do it privately or publicly.”
Omar responded to Greenwald’s remarks to argue that Brennan’s tweet “wouldn’t constitute a violation of the Logan Act” because it was a “one-sided communication and even if directed at a foreign power, seems to fall outside the statute’s scope.”
As the progressive left often do, the Muslim lawmaker played judge and jury, declared that Brennan was not guilty, saying “even with a variety of interpretations, this episode isn’t a Logan Act violation.”
Legally, a tweet in this case wouldn’t constitute a violation of the Logan Act. It’s one-sided communication and even if directed at a foreign power, seems to fall outside the statute’s scope.
And even with a variety of interpretations, this episode isn’t a Logan Act violation. https://t.co/gDnOYTeJi2

Greenwald came back with a blistering response, noting “two things I never thought I’d see,” the first being Omar, who came to America as a Somali refugee, “defending John Brennan, who bombed and killed civilians in numerous countries including Somalia,” and the second being Omar “defending an old, repressive law designed to criminalize dissent from US Foreign Policy.”
“Welcome to Trump-era politics,” Greenwald added, for effect.
Omar replied by calling the journalist’s observations “a weird assertion,” dismissing his remarks as “simply ludicrous” — a similar response seen from Omar amid claims that she married her biological brother.
This is a weird assertion make, at no point did I provide a defense for either.
This is simply ludicrous, but I am sure you knew that. https://t.co/1DfAS97Jnw

The back and forth continued with these retorts:
Wrong, stating a factual limitation of a law isn’t a defense of the law or the person in question. You have your personal feelings wrapped up in this, and I don’t, so let’s agree t disagree on this.

The Logan Act is an obscure 1799 statute that bars private citizens from interfering with diplomatic relations between the United States and foreign countries — actions John Kerry engaged in throughout the Trump administration in regard to Iran.
The law has never been successfully applied in the criminal prosecution of someone, but the FBI, under the corrupt leadership of former director James Comey, employed it to squeeze Trump’s former national security adviser Mike Flynn.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
Narrator: “Ilhan Omar is not an attorney, she doesn’t even play one on tv.”

Can you pause and remember that LTG Flynn was entrapped by a rouge FBI and pled guilty when Mueller threatened to go after his kids. I would suggest that if the government can do this to him, imagine what they can do to yo as a private citizen.

Tweeting to a foreign adversary is no different than picking up the phone and giving then a heads up.

They’re just upset that they didn’t get to waterboard or drone strike some innocent people. No new wars under Trump I believe is why they hate his guts so much. Been the most peaceful 4 years in recent memory.

Many folks here don’t seem to know that before Glenn was a pulitzer winning journalist, he was a constitutional lawyer so he damn well knows what the hell he is talking about. Glenn is steadfast as a rock in his principles and doesn’t sway with the political winds.
