Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel appeared on Fox News’ The Story late Tuesday to defend President Donald Trump’s legal team from unexpected criticism from conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh.

After the legal team’s “bombshell” press conference last Thursday, Limbaugh bashed it, saying on Monday, “They promised blockbuster stuff, and then nothing happened.”

“I mean, if you’re gonna promise blockbuster stuff like that, then there has — now, I understand — look, I’m the one that’s been telling everybody, this stuff doesn’t happen at warp speed, light speed the way cases are made for presentation in court, but if you’re gonna do a press conference like that with the promise of blockbusters, then there has to be something more than what that press conference delivered,” he added.

Responding to this accusation, McDaniel listed off some of the relevant discoveries that have been uncovered and addressed by the president’s legal team, from “laws being changed in the name of COVID that allowed a more porous election” to voters being allowed to vote without showing their voter IDs.

But fill-in host Sandra Smith quickly pushed back, arguing that Limbaugh wasn’t “denying any of that” but merely stating that “if you’re going to do a press conference like that, with the promise of blockbusters, then there’s got to be something more than what was delivered at that press conference.”

McDaniel responded by stating the president’s legal team needs more time, which of course raises the question of why they’d scheduled a press conference so early in the process.

“But what I will say is we still have recounts ongoing in Wisconsin. And in Georgia, it was an audit, but we didn’t do the signature match, and I do think that’s a valid point that you have to match these signatures with that big change of rejection from 2018 to 2020. That’s a huge difference,” she added.

Over the weekend the president’s legal team filed a request asking that Georgia’s ongoing recount “include signature-matching and other vital safeguards.”

“If there is no signature-matching, this would be as phony as the initial vote count and recount. Let’s stop giving the people false results. There must be a time when we stop counting illegal ballots. Hopefully it is coming soon.”

Both incumbent Georgia Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler also expressed support for this requirement:

However, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, has refused to acquiesce to their demands, arguing that signature-matching was already conducted when the voting originally happened.

“[T]he problem is it’s like the car’s broken down and you can’t figure out what happened until you get a look under the hood. And that’s with the canvas and certification process allows,” McDaniel continued Tuesday on Fox.

“In some states you can’t do an audit or recount until after the certification, but we do need to figure out where things went wrong in some of these states and why we see such differences from 2016 and 2018 as to how basic laws were applied to ensure election integrity.”

The discussion concluded with Smith asking McDaniel about the “Republicans” who’ve been demanding Republicans not vote for Perdue or Loeffler in the pivotal January Senate races — and the growing belief that Trump himself could make or break the election depending on how he proceeds.

“I think the president is perfectly within his rights to ask questions about the election process and make sure that it was fair and transparent, and I don’t think that affects voters at all,” McDaniel replied.

But it could when members of his own legal team are telling Republicans to withhold their vote …

“I will say he got 350,000 more votes in Georgia than he did in 2016. This is a president with coattails. You look at what happened in the House, with us picking up 13 seats. You look at the Senate; we’re at 50,” McDaniel continued.

“You look at the 135 legislative seats that we picked up across the country. This is President Trump bringing up the whole ticket, and they’re going to want him in Georgia campaigning with these two candidates. He knows that, and he’s going to be critical.”

Smith then pondered whether the president will take a break from his voter fraud battle to “campaign in Georgia.”

“I’m not going to put words in his mouth. You’ve seen the vice president there, but the president is the leader of our party, and I think he will support these candidates. He’s been doing it all over his Twitter, and he’s absolutely invested in those races,” McDaniel replied.

As of Wednesday, the president had not yet posted a single tweet urging Georgia voters to turn out in January for Perdue and Loeffler. To be fair, the election is still months away. Plus, he believes Perdue and Loeffler have technically already won:
