Sen. Rand Paul said he has been informed that the U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., is declining to investigate the “thugs” who accosted him and his wife as they left the Republican National Convention in August, also injuring a police officer.
“The DC U.S. Attorney today confirmed to me that they will not pursue an investigation of who is funding the thugs who attacked my wife and me and sent a DC police officer to the hospital,” the Kentucky Republican tweeted Monday.
Paul’s tweet also contained a clip of an interview he did on August 31 on “Fox & Friends” in which he discussed his belief that a criminal conspiracy is responsible for the confrontations between the couple and other RNC attendees.
“This also isn’t normal. There’s something going on here. This is like something the FBI needs to be involved in…” Paul said before being cut off by co-host Steve Doocy, who asked the Kentucky senator to clarify his comments.

“My feeling is there is interstate criminal traffic being paid for across states lines, but you won’t know unless you arrest them,” Paul explained. “I promise you that at least some of the members who attacked us were not from D.C., they flew here on a plane, they all got fresh new clothes, and they were paid to be here. It is a crime to do that and it needs to be traced.”
“The FBI needs to investigate and the only way you can do it is you need to arrest people,” he added.
But apparently, the FBI, the Justice Department, and acting U.S. Attorney Michael R. Sherwin, who is in charge of the D.C. office, aren’t interested.
That said, large groups of rioters descended on the nation’s capital ahead of the final night of the RNC, where supporters of President Donald Trump gathered at the White House to hear him speak.
Paul said based on the reactions of those crowds there was enough evidence to open a probe into how the demonstrations were organized and, perhaps, financed, Sara A. Carter’s news site reported.
The outlet added that reports claimed scores of protesters were bussed into D.C. specifically to harass the president’s supporters.
For his part, Paul believed that his life and that of his wife were literally in danger.
“I truly believe this with every fiber of my being, had they gotten at us they would have gotten us to the ground, we might not have been killed, might just have been injured by being kicked in the head, or kicked in the stomach until we were senseless,” he said.

During the August incident, an Orlando, Fla. man, Brennen Sermon, 27, was arrested and charged with punching a D.C. police officer, causing a laceration and swelling above an eye. He faced up to 180 days in jail.
A week later, DC Police Union Chairman Greggory Pemberton said that the city needs more officers, not less of them, as some on the left have pushed in their “defund the police” efforts.
He also said that violent protesters and rioters around the country should be arrested and charged.
“Over this past week beginning with the [Republican National Convention], demonstrators and rioters have once again proved the opposite of their agenda. This city needs cops and it needs a lot more of them. The department has suspended our schedules and suspended days off; many members are working 18 plus hours straight,” he told The Daily Caller.
