The head of a well-heeled private school in South California defended his decision to oppose a student who wore a red “MAGA” hat, saying it “was not political” but rather a matter of “dignity.”

In a Friday evening report during Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” correspondent Rick Leventhal said Dr. Gary Krahn, principal of the San Diego-based La Jolla Country Day School, released a video explaining why he approached the student.

“Tucker, the irony of your alma mater knocking a kid for wearing a MAGA hat to school is almost too rich to believe, but it’s true,” Leventhal said, noting that host Tucker Carlson also attended the school in his youth.

Leventhal then noted that Krahn posted a video to the “school community” in which he attempted to justify why he approached that particular student, even though attendees at the private school are permitted to wear political attire.

In a video, Krahn said “the First Amendment is very important to me. I was willing to give my life for it as I served in the Army. It is one of the most precious things that we have in this nation.” He went on to note that the student “has every right to wear” the hat and that Krahn “had friends give their [lives] for that right.”

“It was not a political decision to reach out to him and talk about that hat. It was a decision about dignity,” Krahn said. “The inherent value that all humans have.

“When I approached the student, I shared with him that he had that right to wear the hat,” Krahn added. “I also shared with him the impact it has on our community. That hat has a symbol of racism and hatred.

“We can argue about whether that’s true or not. But it’s a fact that in our community, there’s a belief that that’s what that hat represents. And because we’re a community of dignity — that all people have value, and that all people are vulnerable — I wanted the student to know that his decision was gonna have an impact on people. He graciously took off his hat.”

“We can argue about whether that’s true or not, Tucker,” Leventhal said as he wrapped up his report. “Krahn actually said that they will continue to honor the First Amendment at your alma mater.”

That drew laughter from Carlson.

“I wonder, quick quick, let’s do this segment in five years and see if anybody is paying tuition to go to a school like that, it’s just hilarious,” the host said. “They’re all going away!”

Earlier, Krahn sent an email to staffers that was leaked to KUSI-TV in which he said, “I have talked with that student who now understands why that hat is offensive to our community. He will not wear it again.”

“In addition, his mom said that she is embarrassed by his actions. She will fulfill her role as a parent. We will continue to grow as a community that sees and values the dignity of all people,” the email continued.
