An elected California member of the Democrat National Committee has expressed interest in “deprogramming” the 73+ million Americans who voted for President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

In disturbing tweets posted Tuesday evening, DNC member David Atkins argued that the president’s supporters must be “deprogrammed” because they comprise a “conspiracy theory fueled belligerent death cult against reality & basic decency.”

It’s apparently Atkins’ belief that every single Trump supporter in America subscribes to the QAnon conspiracy theory, that the mainstream media outlet Fox News is itself equivalent to QAnon and that all Trump supporters are responsible for the kidnapping plot in Michigan that was hatched together by anti-Trump anarchists

Deprogramming refers to an authoritarian process by which someone is “convinced” to (or rather forced into) abandoning allegedly controversial beliefs that go against the status quo. It’s currently being used against Muslims in China.

“Did you know there are roughly one million people currently held in internment camps in China? One million people held against their will, facing no criminal charges, forcefully cut off from the outside world. This is the story of the Uighurs, a small, insulated ethnic minority in western China,” NBC News reported last year.

“The predominantly Muslim group has faced growing levels of Islamophobia and paranoia from the Chinese government. Right now, roughly 10 percent of the Uighur population has been ‘disappeared,’ held indefinitely in re-education camps where they are subjected to totalitarian indoctrination in an attempt to erase their identity, their language, their religion and their culture.”

That is what’s known as deprogramming, and apparently, Atkins believes it’s necessary to impose the same authoritarianism on a large chunk of the American people.

But even more disturbing is the fact that, judging by his tweets’ likes, tens of thousands of other Democrats share this radical, authoritarian fantasy.

It should come as only a small shocker though given the left’s growing embrace of authoritarianism.

Commenting earlier this week on the left’s additional desire to censor all dissenting opinions, Pullitizer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald opined in a a tweet that “[t]here is no more authoritarian species in the wild than US liberals.”

“In every controversy, they side with institutions of authority: they love the large corporate press, the FBI, CIA, workplace managers, editors – they worship & revere authority,” he added.

Was he wrong?

The irony is that Atkins has aligned himself with a party and ideology that believes men can menstruate, silence is violence, black conservatives are white supremacists, humanity is slated for extinction in 10 years, President Donald Trump is a Russian asset and Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden is president-elect (not yet).

The point is that his own side is teeming with irrationality, illiberalism and conspiracy theories, raising the question of why only one side’s alleged lunatics deserve to be deprogrammed. It’s almost as if his calls for deprogramming have nothing to do with rectifying erroneous beliefs and everything to do with silencing dissent.

Regardless, there’s a reason the Second Amendment exists — to protect the American people from authoritarian zealots like David Atkins and those like him.
