Sen. Mitt Romney, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, ripped on him again in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper over the president’s refusal to concede election defeat to Joe Biden.
After claiming, without evidence, that President Trump’s legal challenges to voting irregularities in several battleground states have no merit, Tapper asked Romney about the president’s declaration that he actually won the election.
“You’re not going to change the nature of President Trump in these last days,” Romney said. “He is who he is and he has a relatively relaxed relationship with the truth, and so he’s going to keep on fighting until the very end.
“But I’m convinced that once all remedies are exhausted, if those are exhausted in a way that’s not favorable to him, he will accept the inevitable,” Romney, a Utah Republican who twice lost his bid for the presidency, continued.
“But don’t expect him to go quietly into the night, that’s not how he operates,” Romney added.
Tapper pressed Romney, who is not a member of President Trump’s legal team, whether he had seen “any evidence” of voter fraud or irregularities.
“Well, I haven’t personally,” Romney said. “I’ve listened to the head of the Republican National Committee (who is his daughter, Ronna McDaniel) and to commentators on your network and other networks… No one has alleged something in such a sufficient scale that it would change the outcome.”
However, “there are recounts that will go on,” Romney continued as Tapped sipped a drink, “and you have states where the margin is 10,000, another state where it’s 20,000, 30,000.
“When the numbers are that low, there’s a potential for reversal, so I understand why the president wants to keep on fighting,” he said. “I do believe, however, that it’s destructive to the cause of democracy to suggest widespread fraud or corruption. There’s just no evidence of that at this stage.”
Lawyers with the president’s campaign, however, have said they are in possession of evidence of irregularities they believe will wind up reversing Biden wins in enough swing states for Trump to be reelected, however.
Separately, on Friday Tapper repeatedly insulted President Trump’s children, referring to them as “spawn” and blasting them for defending their dad while questioning the integrity of results in states where they appear to be problematic.
During a three-way segment with Dana Bash and CNN’s White House correspondent Abby Phillip, Tapper said, “Dana, the three of us have been noting the response or lack thereof from Republican officials when it comes to the untethered and wild allegations being made by the president and his spawn and his supporters about the election, all of the crazy and false claims about it being stolen.”
He also called Romney’s claim last week that the president was within his rights to seek recounts where there are alleged irregularities or questions about ballots “mealy-mouthed.”
“And it’s worse when you watch Fox News where many of the president’s advisers and supporters and campaign aides are going on the television, speaking to the president’s supporters every single day, reinforcing falsehoods, frankly fake manipulated videos on social media, these are all things that are corrosive to democracy and not enough republicans are being specific about what the problem is,” Phillip said.
“And you’re upset about what you see on Fox and you have every right to be, you should check out the Twitter feed of the president’s spawn, because it is like rantings in crayon by somebody having an LSD trip,” Tapper responded.
“I mean, is somebody — these are claims that are just so wild that they wouldn’t even make, forget Fox, they wouldn’t make Fox Business where, you know, are all sorts of facts go to die,” he claimed.
