Supporters of President Donald Trump who were gathered outside a ballot counting station in Phoenix Wednesday night were heard shouting “Fox News sucks” during a live shot on MSNBC.
Host Rachel Maddow introduced the segment and swung it out to correspondent Gadi Schwartz, who was covering a protest outside the Maricopa County ballot processing center.
Schwartz began explaining that he and his camera crew were keeping the lights off so as not to draw attention to themselves from attendees who “have their emotions running high” after the state was initially called for Democrat Joe Biden early on Election Night, only to have some media outlets re-designate it ‘undecided’ after it became apparent the outcome was far from certain.
He also noted that the building was being secured by police.
“They’ve got some sheriff’s officers that are blocking the entrance to the election center,” he said.
“One of the things that we’ve seen is them chanting very loudly ‘Count that vote! Count that vote!’ and then we’ve got poll workers that are coming off of shift, and the poll workers have to be escorted out by armed sheriff’s deputies down those stairs and into vans and taken away from here,” he said.
The MSNBC reporter then noted, “We don’t want to get too close, a lot of people in the crowd are not wearing masks so we’re keeping a respectful distance, but a loud and very boisterous crowd, you’ll start hearing them.”
At that, Schwartz began to make his way through a parking lot and closer to the demonstrators, who then could be heard throwing shade at Fox News.
“They’re actually chanting ‘Fox News sucks! Fox News sucks!’” Schwartz said, adding: “We have not called Arizona, a lot of other organizations have made that decision not to call Arizona, it is much too close right now, but this is the scene outside of the Maricopa election center.”
On his FiveThirtyEight blog late Wednesday, pollster Nate Silver called on The Associated Press and Fox News to put Arizona back in the ‘undecided’ column.
“I don’t know, I guess I’d say that Biden will win Arizona if you forced me to pick, but I sure as heck don’t think the state should have been called by anyone, and I think the calls that were previously made should be retracted now,” he wrote.
But that’s not likely to happen.
“The AP called the race at 2:50 a.m. EST Wednesday, after an analysis of ballots cast statewide concluded there were not enough outstanding to allow Trump to catch up,” the newswire said in an explainer.
“With 80% of the expected vote counted, Biden was ahead by 5 percentage points, with a roughly 130,000-vote lead over Trump with about 2.6 million ballots counted. The remaining ballots left to be counted, including mail-in votes in Maricopa County, where Biden performed strongly, were not enough for Trump to catch up to the former vice president,” it added.
Also, Arnon Miskin, who heads up Fox News’ Decision Desk, continued defending the early call Wednesday, saying “we strongly believe that our call will stand, and that’s why we’re not pulling back the call.”
As for Trump supporters’ anger at Fox News, even some of the network’s personalities appeared surprised by the network’s early Arizona call for the former VP.
