An unidentified NYPD officer who allegedly activated his patrol car loudspeaker to announce “Trump 2020” is now on an unpaid suspension pending an investigation. The incident, which was captured on cell phone video occurred on Saturday night, October 24, in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, brought quick condemnation from police brass.

In one clip posted to Twitter embedded below that is closing in on one million views, the officer says “Trump 2020,” then seemingly dares bystanders to “put it on YouTube, put it on Facebook. Take a picture, take a video, put it on your Facebook, put it on YouTube. Have some fun.” He then apparently refers to someone who is taking exception to the on-duty electioneering as a “tough guy.”

NYPD officials, however, did not perceive the fun or the humor in the situation.

“On Sunday, the NYPD announced the officer was suspended without pay and is under investigation. On-duty or in-uniform officers are prohibited from ‘endorsing political candidates or publicly expressing personal views and opinions,’ according to the NYPD’s patrol guide,” CBS News reported.

In another clip of the same encounter that has gone viral, the officer appears to comply with a demand from an outraged bystander to endorse “Trump 2020” again. (**Warning for language)

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea described the incident as “one hundred percent unacceptable” and reaffirmed that cops must avoid political statements. Chief of Department Terence Monahan similarly declared that “When you wear our uniform it is imperative to remain apolitical. Behavior like this will not be tolerated and will be dealt with.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio also chimed in that “ANY NYPD Officer pushing ANY political agenda while on duty will face consequences. We will act fast here, and this will not be tolerated.”

The officer could face additional discipline when the probe concludes.

The NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association claims that the suspension itself is disproportionate, however, adding that Monahan took a knee with protesters in June 2020 without facing any discipline for what might be construed as a political act.

CBS New York provided more context about the “Trump 2020” incident, including an interview with an eye/earwitness:

In August 2020, the New York City Police Benevolent Association — a union that represents 24,000 NYPD officers, endorsed Donald Trump — formally backed President Trump in a first-ever endorsement of a presidential candidate.
