Despite pre-debate stories about NBC News’ reporter Kristen Welker’s “deep” ties to the Democratic Party, the general consensus seemed to be that she did an admirable job as moderator of the final presidential debate — which is not to say that she didn’t have her faults.
Among those impressed was Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of ABC’s “The View,” who took exception to the “nasty way” Welker was treated before the debate.
Goldberg specifically named Fox News host Tucker Carlson and other personalities at the network, calling on them to apologize.
There were no specifics offered on what Carlson or any other Fox News personality may have said, but then this is “The View.”
“I want Fox News to apologize to Kristen for the nasty way they have been treating her before this debate,” Goldberg said. “I want them to apologize. I want Tucker Carlson to apologize to her. I want those people that sit in that four-people show to apologize to her for how they tried to really muss up the waters and talk about her like she didn’t know what she was doing.”
Even Mediaite pointed out that there didn’t appear to be any instances involving Carlson that stood out.
“It is worth noting that many Fox News personalities have praised Welker for her moderating, and Carlson never actually criticized Welker on-air, or anywhere else as far as we can tell via a search of TV Eyes transcript database,” the site observed.
The tone of Thursday’s debate was noticeably improved from the first debate, with the added ability to mute the microphones widely seen as a contributing factor, although Welker did get some credit as well.
Among the more pointed questions from Welker was one on the Black Lives Matter movement.
“You’ve described the Black Lives Matter movement as a symbol of hate. What do you say to Americans who say that kind of language from a president is contributing to a climate of hate and racial strife?” she asked.
But considering the disastrous job Fox News’ Chris Wallace did as moderator in the first debate, where at one point Trump suggested he was debating Wallace because of his frequent interruptions, it wasn’t hard for Welker to earn a better grade.
At one point early on Thursday night, President Trump complimented Welker.
“So far I respect very much the way you are handling this, I have to say,” he told the NBC News correspondent.
Here’s a tally of the debate from CBS News:

Not that Welker didn’t interrupt — as seen in a tally shared by Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel at the end of the contest:
For those keeping score, moderator interruptions for each candidate:
Biden: 8
Trump: 41Despite this, @realDonaldTrump beat Biden and effectively laid out the case for Four More Years! #Debates2020

Here’s a sampling of responses to the story from Twitter, to include some critiques of the job Welker did:
Kristen Welker did a good job (much better than I expected) moderating the debate. i was pleasantly surprised when she asked Biden about the corruption scandal.
— Newt Gingrich (@newtgingrich) October 23, 2020
It would be great if Welker would stop interrupting. I want to give her credit for asking Biden about his family’s documented hucksterism but she’s subtracting from that with the interruptions.

Walker wasn’t that good but Wallace left the bar very very low

She is certainly better than Wallace, not perfect; but I’m pleasantly surprised

We only “ have to move on” when Trump is talking .

She’s not been terrible. But she’s interrupted trump multiple times to save Biden a few times. Never interrupts Biden and almost gives him last word

Compared to Chris Wallace she did a fantastic job and I’m happy with the points she brought up

The President repaid her with a compliment. You know she wishes that didn’t happen. Her superficial friends will eat her alive.
