In addition to deciding who will lead the United States as president for the next four years, voters will also be determining the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, which may be just as important, if not more so.
If President Donald Trump is reelected and the Democratic Party controls both the House and Senate, it’s all but guaranteed that he will be removed from office within a year — Democrats have already engaged in one impeachment sham.
On that note, there’s promising news out of Minnesota for conservatives. A new poll shows that incumbent Sen. Tina Smith, a Democrat, has lost a double-digit lead and is now locked in a dead heat with her Republican opponent, Jason Lewis.
“A KTSP/SurveyUSA poll released on Wednesday showed Lewis and Smith in a virtual tie (43% to 42%),” Fox News reported.
The race appears to be steadily moving in Lewis’ direction. He trailed by seven points in early October and by eleven points in mid-September when Smith led 47% to 36%.
As far a Lewis is concerned, Minnesota is “ripe for the picking,” and may even be in play for President Trump — in 2016, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton carried the state by just 44,000 votes, 46.4% – 44.9%.
Lewis told Fox News that voters are paying closer attention to politics as the election gets closer.
“Frankly, it’s not all that surprising,” he said of the polling. “We’re seeing a marked shift in our direction and in the president’s direction.”
Carleton College political analyst Steven Schier told 5 Eyewitness News a factor in the tightening of the race is that Smith lost much of her lead among women and suburban voters.
“This Senate race could go either way and it’s a bit of a surprise because Tina Smith has had a lot more resources than Jason Lewis,” Schier said.
The ABC affiliate noted that as of Sept. 30, Smith had raised more than $14 million dollars and spent more than $11 million, while Lewis has raised nearly $5 million and spent about $3.4 million.
The Democratic incumbent has reportedly been flooding the TV airwaves with ads.
Smith’s remarks about women as a talk radio host was being featured in ads run by outside groups.
“It’s been a long time since Jason Lewis has been on the radio as a talk show host,” Schier said. “He’s been a member of the House. He’s run for office for Congress twice and for some voters that’s old news.”
While the Real Clear Politics average shows Biden with a 6 point lead, senior Trump campaign advisor Jason Miller has not ruled out the possibility of a win.
In a call to reporters earlier this week, Miller stressed that Trump is more focused on states he carried in 2016, MPR News reported.
“President Trump is aggressively campaigning in every state that he won in 2016,” he said, adding that “Minnesota could still be in play as a late breaker.”
