For the Democratic Party’s radical left-wing base, there is zero room for compromise or civility with the other side.
Look no further than the reaction to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., for her friendly gesture towards Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., after the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman closed out the fourth and final day of testimony in Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing.
Progressives were so outraged over a few kind words and a hug that they called for the ranking member of the Judiciary panel to step down.
“Mr. Chairman, I just want to thank you. This has been one of the best set of hearings that I’ve participated in and I want to thank you for your fairness and the opportunity of going back and forth,” Feinstein told Graham. “It leaves one with a lot of hopes, a lot of questions and even some ideas — perhaps some good bipartisan legislation we can put together to make this great country even better.”

“Thank you so much for your leadership,” she added, following up her remarks with a friendly embrace of her Republican colleague.
Graham, who turned red in the face while admonishing Senate Democrats in 2018 for their behavior during the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, replied, “You are a joy to work with.”
Demand Justice, a left-wing group looking to reshape the Supreme Court, threw a fit, insisting that she surrender her leadership role on the panel, as did the organization’s executive director Brian Fallon, who was press secretary for Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Keeping Feinstein as the top Democrat on Judiciary Committee is a monument to our side's weakness on the fight for the courts.

We launched this ad calling on Sen. Feinstein to fight like everything is on the line — because it is.
She didn’t. We’re calling on her to step down as the leader of the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee. pic.twitter.com/Cihr3Kq4bK

And that was just the beginning of the backlash for “the hug that broke the camel’s back.”
But then, considering that Graham was successful in setting up a committee vote to advance the nomination of Barrett on Oct. 22, which all but assures her confirmation to the Supreme Court by the end of the month, the outcry may little more than the left venting their frustrations.
Here’s a sampling of other responses to the story from Twitter.

I really can’t get over what a betrayal this moment was to the thousands (millions?) of progressive activists who have worked their asses off fighting Barrett’s confirmation tooth and nail. Feinstein should be ashamed, and she should step down immediately. https://t.co/uPVDeQgrlC

This is abominable. Aside from everything else making this nomination a sham, Graham violated the quorum rule. And Feinstein praises him for his corrupt leadership? What a disgraceful thing. https://t.co/sPJUVblmjM

Graham refuses to take a coronavirus test, so avoiding physical contact with him is common sense, especially if you’re 87 years old like Feinstein. But — https://t.co/3EKmXeJDBI

It’s time for Dianne Feinstein to step down. You can respect her service, but she’s done Democrats a huge disservice and proven ill-equipped to handle the GOP degradation of our judicial system.

If Biden wins, he should offer Dianne Feinstein whatever position is necessary to get her out of the Senate. Ambassador? A cabinet secretary? Some regulatory czar? Literally anything to open up that seat. Feinstein is disastrously, jaw-droppingly bad at this. What a nightmare. https://t.co/bnXtBXxlHQ

Dianne Feinstein is the epitome of Democratic Party weakness. You don’t thank someone for robbing you. https://t.co/CGQdoJu8kd

My mom died in January, my father is 84, and I haven’t been able to hug him since March. Here’s Dianne Feinstein (87) hugging covid-untested Lindsey Graham. Makes me ill. https://t.co/32EUKtJgOz

Dianne Feinstein needs to step down. Watching her hug Lindsay Graham was a fucking punch in the gut for so many reasons, and I’m hardly the only one. California, y’all need to start letting her know
