Fox News host Tucker Carlson examined new research questioning the effectiveness of face coverings on Tuesday’s show, scrutinizing the scientific rationale for doing so.
His opening monologue on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” began with an observation that one year ago, wearing masks after Halloween would have been seen as a negative.
“Masks? What kind of person covers his face in public?” he asked. “Let’s see, armed robbers do that. So do Klansmen and radical Wahhabists. The rest of us don’t do that. In fact, until recently, wearing a mask in public was illegal in many places.
“The assumption was if you are hiding who you are, you are up to something bad. It made people nervous,” Carlson continued. “By our nature, we want to see each other. We need to see each other. Looking at another person’s face is the beginning of connection. Eliminating that connection dehumanizes us. That used to be obvious.”
He cited the Spanish flu pandemic, which lasted from Feb. 1918 to April 1920, to say that many cities passed mandatory mask ordinances and some California citizens rebelled.
Under today’s society, Carlson noted there could be no modern anti-mask league, as was seen in San Francisco last century.
“Facebook and Google would shut it down in one day,” he said.
“Now we have a mandatory consensus. Masks are good. Anyone who questions the goodness of masks are bad,” Carlson said. “What they are really telling you is that masks are magic. What appears to be a flimsy cotton face covering is in fact a holy amulet that protects us from disease more reliably than any modern medicine.”
A clip was run of New York’s Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo talking about the importance of wearing masks.
“The man who probably killed more Americans from the coronavirus than anyone apart from the Chinese government explained that if you don’t wear a mask, you’re a murderer,” Carlson said in setting up the clip.
He also cites a Nashville city councilwoman suggesting that citizens who don’t wear masks should be charged with attempted murder.
“So, you thought you were smiling at someone you loved. In fact, you were pulling the trigger. See you in jail miscreant!” Carlson deadpanned.
The Fox News host then turned to the science on masks, citing a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“A new study conducted by 11 medical institutions analyzed a group of people who tested positive for COVID during the month of July,” Carlson explained. “Here is the interesting part, among those who were infected, more than 70% reported that they had always wore a mask for the preceding 17 days. Another 14.4% said they had often wore a mask.”
“In other words, almost everyone who got the coronavirus in July was wearing a mask and they were infected anyway,” he said. “So, clearly, it doesn’t work the way they tell us it works. Clearly, someone has been lying to us, many people actually.”
Citing a study published in April, Carlson said that surgical masks are ineffective at stopping airborne particles and are only useful in stopping large droplets.
“That is not how the coronavirus spreads,” he noted. “According to a letter signed by several researchers this month in ‘Science’ magazine, the biggest threat by far is one it is contained in small particles which can easily bypass face masks in aerosol form.”
Carlson went on to show that science changes, using Dr. Anthony Fauci’s stance on masks as an example.
