Even an ultra-liberal like Bill Maher has realized that California — with Democrats controlling all levers of government from the governor’s mansion on down — is rapidly devolving into a failed state that can’t even manage to fix potholes in the street. Although he regularly trashes President Trump and most Republicans, Maher got real on his Real Time show by acknowledging that overtaxed businesses and individuals want out.
Maher started off the discussion on his HBO platform by essentially letting U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, the Russian-conspiracy obsessed Democrat, off the hook by claiming that state issues don’t fall under the congressman’s domain. Maher than got to his point, comparing present-day California to the past alleged chaotic conditions in a European country.
“But I live in California, and I’m going to b***h a little bit…There is an exodus. California businesses are leaving the state in droves.” Apparently reading from notes, Maher pointed out that “In just 2018 and 2019, which were economic boom years, 765 commercial facilities left, 13,000 businesses left between 2009 and 2016.”
“Look, I came out here in 1983. I found paradise. I love California. I do. I don’t want to leave, but I feel like I’m living in Italy in the 70s or something. Super high taxes, potholes in the road, fires. I don’t know what I’m getting for my super-high taxes,” he continued.
“And this talk of exodus — people talk about this a lot now. And people are leaving. Like, in my industry, Joe Rogan left, Ben Shapiro…Elon Musk talked about leaving”

Maher then asked Schiff, who represents a district that includes West Hollywood, to respond to his concerns. “Well, I think we have to make every effort to make this a more business-friendly state,” Schiff replied. “And I don’t think that there’s anything incompatible with being progressive and also wanting to make sure that this is a place that businesses can survive and thrive.”
Schiff seems unaware, however, that the “science,” as it were, in this context is settled. In a case like California that is solidly in the grip of far-left progressives pushing an SJW agenda no matter what the economic or human cost, it’s get woke, go broke.
In addition to an overbearing tax and regulatory policy, plus a bloated and self-perpetuating state bureaucracy, which provide disincentives for productivity and expansion, Maher overlooked mentioning rampant decay in California’s quality of life. This includes out-of-control homelessness mostly involving substance abusers, and random street violence, which is turning Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other areas into a dystopian nightmare. If more and more of its vital tax base of middle-class and upper-middle class-citizens head for the exits, California likely will no longer be able to function.
Again, Maher is occasionally on target with his comedic pronouncements. For example, he has criticized COVID lockdowns, the mixed messages from Dr. Fauci, and ripped the media for defending riots. He recently returned to form, however, by calling Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, a “f**king nut” over her religious beliefs.
