An almost unbelievable video was posted on social media Friday featuring Joe Biden who, in a speech to U.S. service members, appears to call them “stupid bas***ds.”
“I have incredibly good judgment,” Biden says in the clip. “One, I married Jill, and two, I appointed Johnson to the academy. I just want you to know that. Clap for that, you stupid bas***ds.”
In another clip, a female U.S. Air Force lieutenant with the surname of “Johnson” on her uniform nametape introduces Biden, who was then vice president.
The caption accompanying the YouTube video says, “Vice President Joe Biden, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom calls A room full of servicemen and servicewomen at an undisclosed location in southwest Asia stupid bas***ds in March 2016. A real class act.”
After his “bas***ds” comment, Biden adds the group “must be slow” while calling them “a dull bunch,” to a tepid response at an airbase in Abu Dhabi on March 7, 2016.
Andrew Bates, director of rapid response for the Biden campaign, immediately pushed back on the negative responses the clip was beginning to generate, claiming the then-VP made his comments in jest.
“Vice President Biden was jokingly encouraging the audience to clap for an airwoman on the stage, and a number of service members can be seen laughing and smiling at the comment,” he said, according to the Washington Examiner.
“Seconds before, he praised them for ‘the incredible sacrifices [they] make for our country.’ He thanked them for their patriotism and courage throughout, and closed his remarks by saying, ‘you’re the finest generation of warriors the world has ever, ever known’ – receiving an enthusiastic ovation.”
Biden’s comments were defended in the liberal press. The Daily Beast, for instance, claimed was gaining “traction on the pro-Trump internet late Friday afternoon.” But the outlet also republished the same response from Bates that he gave to the Washington Examiner, incorrectly claiming they were made “exclusively” to The Daily Beast.
The outlet also said that Biden has been “strongly defending the country’s soldiers” while repeating debunked claims made in a story by editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic earlier this month that President Donald Trump called U.S. troops “losers” and “suckers” during a visit to France in 2018.
Those comments were immediately refuted by a number of people who have gone on the record and were with the president during the visit. Goldberg, meanwhile, cited four unnamed sources, none of whom have come forward to go on the record.
“The Atlantic story on @realDonaldTrump is total BS. I was actually there and one of the people part of the discussion – this never happened,” then-White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders noted in a tweet shortly after The Atlantic’s story came out. “I am disgusted by this false attack.”
“Anyone else notice that there are now four individuals with first-hand knowledge who are ON THE RECORD denying The Atlantic story? This matches the publications four anonymous sources,” noted White House aide and deputy assistant press secretary Judd Deere. “Will The Atlantic stand by their false anonymous reporting or listen to those who were there?”
Scores of media outlets ran with The Atlantic story despite the immediate rebukes and rebuttals by members of the president’s staff who were on the ground at the time, including then-National Security Adviser John Bolton.
But some of the same outlets are already defending Biden, despite the obvious difference that his comments were captured on video and those allegedly made by President Trump came from still-unknown sources who have refused to go on record.
That difference was noted online. (** Language warning)
Why does he get the benefit of the doubt?

First, Joe Biden called a retired Iowa farmer “fat!” Then he said African-American Trump supporters “ain’t black!” Now he refers to our troops as “stupid bastards!” Which group is Joe Biden going to insult next?
