Louisville police arrested two Daily Caller reporters Wednesday night who were covering the riots that followed the Breonna Taylor-related indictment announcement, and they are still languishing in jail.
Shelby Talcott and Jorge Ventura, who reportedly identified themselves as members of the media when they were detained in a mass series of arrests of protesters and others, are still locked up, but are expected to be released sometime later this afternoon. The duo are charged with breaking curfew and unlawful assembly in connection with allegedly failing to disperse and move to a designated media observation area, both misdemeanors.
According to colleague David Hookstead, “The police aren’t dropping the charges, but they’ll be let out of jail after their unjust and garbage arrest for filming the riots.”
Although this story is unfolding rapidly in real time as updates emerge on Twitter, independent reporter Brendan Gutenschwager added that authorities will apparently release the duo on their own recognizance, eliminating the need to post bail or a bond.
UPDATE: @ShelbyTalcott and @VenturaReport are expected to be released within the next four hours.

I have an update on the Daily Caller reporters currently in police custody from last night (@ShelbyTalcott & @VenturaReport)
They are being ROR’d (Released on Recognizance) in the next 4 hours, no bail or bond necessary. Charges still remaining for now, will update if I find more— Brendan Gutenschwager (@BGOnTheScene) September 24, 2020
Newest statement from @ShelbyTalcott:
"I am fine but frustrated. I have told every officer I have seen that I am with the press but have not yet been released."
She also says she thinks the police arrested many people "not involved in any rioting" but that were just out.

Neil Patel, the Daily Caller co-founder (with his college roommate Tucker Carlson), is considering legal action against the police department, he wrote earlier today as part of a five-part Twitter thread below. “We have informed the police that these are reporters who were peacefully doing their job, but they are still refusing to release them,” he explained this morning on social media. “But this is not China. Those reporters flat out have a constitutionally protected role to play on our streets,” he added.

They will not even let us speak with them. Given the fact that our reporters have been repeatedly harassed, punched and even shot at during past protests, we fear for their safety in lockup with people who may want to do them harm. No other news outlet has been on the ground

Unlike other outlets, we have interviewed police about this and told their side of the story. But this is not China. Those reporters flat out have a constitutionally protected role to play on our streets.

The Louisville Police Department (@LMPD) is going to find out all about this in the form of a lawsuit unless things start changing fast.

Talcott says that she is currently in a small jail holding pen with 28 other people with no social distancing evident.
Statement per @ShelbyTalcott from the inside:
“This is absurd. I am packed in with 28 other people in a 20×20 cell. Not all of us have masks, and there is not enough room so people are sleeping on the floor.”

In this video clip below, someone — presumably Talcott –informs an officer that “Sir, we’re press.”

If you've seen footage from the riots across the country over the last few months, chances are it came from @ShelbyTalcott or @VenturaReport.
Now they've been detained for the last 12 hours by @LMPD despite numerous calls from our staff identifying them as press.
Let them go. pic.twitter.com/pmuJy02Mdl

Civil disturbances erupted in Louisville after Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced that one officer was indicted on three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for firing in the apartment of Taylor’s neighbor. The grand jury did not charge any of the officers on the scene with any crime directly connected to the fatal shooting of Taylor.
Two officers were shot during the night and are said to be in stable condition.
