President Donald Trump was caught off guard somewhat Monday while giving Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine a shout out at a campaign event in the Buckeye State
The raucous crowd booed the Republican governor, who issued a statewide order in July mandating that face masks be worn, drawing a reaction from the president.
“We’re joined today by a real good friend of mine,” the president said. “Somebody that’s been with me from the beginning and I’ve been with him since the beginning, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.”
As a chorus of boos rang out, Trump laughed a little before saying, “He’s opening up.”

DeWine, who was endorsed by Trump in 2018 when he was elected to office, required Ohioans to wear facial coverings at all times over the summer if unable to maintain a distance of six feet from others, when indoors — unless in a residence.
“Our preliminary data indicate that the rate of increase in new cases has slowed in the high-risk counties where masks are already mandated, so we are cautiously optimistic that things are heading in the right direction,” he said at the time. “We believe that requiring masks statewide will make a significant difference and will be key to making sure other counties do not progress to a higher level of increased spread.”
And to be sure, residents there are still sore about that.
Lt. Gov. Jon Husted spoke at the campaign event prior to Trump’s appearance and he too was booed unmercifully when he mentioned face masks.
“All right, I get it!” he said with a laugh, acknowledging the widespread discontent.
It didn’t even help when Husted tried to plug Trump face masks.
“You can at least say that you’re trying to save the country by wearing one of President Donald Trump’s masks,” he said, as the booing continued.

As for criticism of Trump holding a campaign rally with large crowds, where social distancing is not possible, and many attendees are likely not to wear masks, DeWine spokesman Dan Tierney said it was a First Amendment issue.
“First Amendment protected speech is a narrow exception,” he explained, according to The Review. “Not all gatherings are related to First Amendment protected speech. However, the exception does apply to all First Amendment speech regardless of viewpoint (ex. protests, political rallies, etc.).”
As might be expected from the aggrieved left, MSNBC’s Chris Hayes responded to the story by calling the crowd a GOP “death cult.”
Good work GOP! You’ve built a hell of a death cult. https://t.co/lw8m9YMvp8

This coming from the same cabal that regularly runs interference for the frequently violent Antifa/Black Lives Matter movement, which recently assassinated a Trump supporter in the lawless streets of Portland, Oregon.
