Democrats keep issuing threats …
As in elected Democrats, not just random liberal Democrats.
Elected Democrats like Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who threatened in a tweet posted Saturday afternoon that “nothing is off the table” if his Republican colleagues go against his party’s wishes and vote on President Donald Trump’s expected SCOTUS nominee.
“If Republicans recklessly & reprehensibly force a SCOTUS vote before the election—nothing is off the table,” the full tweet by the Connecticut senator reads.
Look:
If Republicans recklessly & reprehensibly force a SCOTUS vote before the election—nothing is off the table.
— Richard Blumenthal (@SenBlumenthal) September 19, 2020
As of Sunday afternoon, the tweet boasted a 222 percent ratio. Ouch.
While numerous Democrats have issued similar threats, what rubbed folks the wrong way about his particular tweet was the lack of specifics.
Other threats included warnings such as “we’ll pack the courts” or “well abolish the filibuster.” But Blumenthal’s tweet contained none of that.
This, therefore, raised some questions. Like one Twitter user angrily clapped back in response to the senator’s tweet, “What’s that supposed to mean, Dick?”
Look at this and similar responses below (*Language warning):
What’s that supposed to mean Dick?

What does that mean? Don’t do you’re job or we will make you pay? That sounds like a threat.
— Sunset Thinker❤️🙏☺️ (@EricaCa44605743) September 20, 2020
What the hell does that mean is that a threat? Haven’t you Democrats created enough havoic to this President and his administration. Your party is an embarrassment to our country.
— donna (@drobertacc) September 20, 2020
What is your definition of “nothing is off the table”? Are we back to “that depends on what the definition is “is” is? Or does that mean an atom bomb is off the table? Just someone in the Heartland trying to learn Swampenese…
— GeezLouise 🐸 (@Oh_Geez_Louise) September 20, 2020
@chuckschumer used the same phrase. Is this a physical threat of violence? What exactly does it mean? Republicans will control the House/Senate/WH next year so you cannot be referring to legislation. You guys will be impotent in that regard. So what does it mean? @TheJusticeDept
— CapriEsprit (@CapriEsprit) September 20, 2020
.@SenBlumenthal lied about serving in Vietnam.
Has anything ever been off the table for him?
Hey, Da Nang Dick, so violence isn’t off the table? https://t.co/HIVjqRt5Fo
— John Dennis (@RealJohnDennis) September 20, 2020
You get the picture.
This is why it’s generally wise to speak with precise specifics when issuing threats.
Of course, most people already know what he meant. Within the past 48 hours, liberal Democrats — some of them elected, others not — have threatened to pack the courts, abolish the filibuster, riot and “burn the entire f–king thing down.”
The irony isn’t lost on Blumenthal’s critics, many of whom have pointed out that Democrats have been issuing these threats — and sometimes even acting on them — since the moment President Donald Trump won the 2016 race.
Like one critic wrote, “You’re already doing all of that!”
Indeed.
Look:
Gosh, you mean you’d level false accusations?#Riot?#Burn cities?#Loot?
Threaten physical assault?
Commit #voterfraud?
Embrace #Marxism?
You’re already doing all of that, @SenBlumenthal.
About the only thing left is to kill children … oh, wait! You’re already … https://t.co/Onf51AdwPw
— Larry Alex Taunton (@LarryTaunton) September 19, 2020
Or what, you’re gonna burn the cities down? Or what, you’re going to call POTUS a treasonous spy for Russia? Or what, you’re gonna hold up coronavirus relief? Or what, you’re gonna keep major cities shut down economically? Or what, you’re going to keep schools closed? https://t.co/M8LNNLsRB8
— Tammy Bruce (@HeyTammyBruce) September 19, 2020
OR WHAT? You’re gonna defund the police? Or what, you’re gonna impeach Trump? Or what, you’re gonna call Trump supporters Nazis? Or what, you’re gonna smear the SCOTUS nom as a gang rapist drug dealer? OR WHAT?!
— Tammy Bruce (@HeyTammyBruce) September 19, 2020
What was off the table before then?
— John Hawkins (@johnhawkinsrwn) September 19, 2020
When have Democrats ever take anything off the table? Serious question.
— Ricky Lavina (@LavinaRicky) September 19, 2020
Blumenthal himself is guilty of this.
Flashback to 2018, when he ruthlessly attacked then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by giving credence to a patently absurd accusation that the now-justice had once participated in a “gang rape” and was a serial rapist.
FYI, that “gang rape” never happened …
You suborned perjury to accuse a federal judge of being a serial rapist. Nothing was already of the table for you. Your threats are empty and hollow, just like your moral character.

You’re a deeply unserious person pic.twitter.com/xLgJFxlhBV
— Matt Whitlock (@mattdizwhitlock) September 19, 2020
There’s also the hypocrisy factor to consider.
When then-President Barack Hussein Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court after Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in 2016, Blumenthal urged his Republican colleagues in the Senate to hold hearings.
Look:
I was outside #SCOTUS today urging @SenateGOP: #DoYourJob & hold a hearing/vote for @SCOTUSnom Garland. #WeNeedNine pic.twitter.com/wys89tzEdr
— Richard Blumenthal (@SenBlumenthal) September 8, 2016
Four years later, it’s an entirely different story. To be fair, it is as well for his Republican colleagues, as pointed out in the blunt tweet below by Megyn Kelly:
-RBG’s (understandable) final wish will have no effect. B/c, politics.
-McConnell etc will be hypocritical to hold a vote in an election year. But, politics.
-Dems have no leg to stand on in objecting, since they gleefully supported H. Reid changing Sen rules on judges.
Politics!— Megyn Kelly (@megynkelly) September 19, 2020
