There may be no better sign that Democrats are taking a beating in the polls over the rioting and lawlessness taking place in the streets of American cities than to see House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suddenly denouncing the behavior.

Pelosi is the voice of the party, which has spent months running interference for the lawless actions of Black Lives Matter mob, insisting that they’re “peaceful protesters,” but the speaker made an abrupt about-face on Thursday, denouncing the rioting that has resulted in well over a billion dollars in damage.

The San Francisco Democrat who once likened federal agents to “stormtroopers” rose on the House floor to give voice to an “important statement of our American values.”

“We support peaceful demonstrations. We participate in them. They are part of the essence of our democracy,” she said. “That does not include looting, starting fires, or rioting. They should be prosecuted. That is lawlessness.”

Hypocrisy knows no bounds in Washington, DC.

Pelosi mentioning Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who spoke against rioting right after CNN’s Don Lemon sounded a warning that it was having a negative impact on polling, is a strong clue that it’s hurting their chances in November.

“I’m very proud that Joe Biden has presented the clarity of that,” she said, going on to claim a new poll is showing “the American people support congressional Democrats over President Trump in terms of dealing with the issue of crime in our country for all of their misrepresentations.”

The Trump campaign has been pushing a “law and order” message in the face of all the carnage in the streets and it’s clearly resonating with the American people.

The latest Rasmussen Reports polls show that 59% of likely U.S. voters think there is a war on police underway, and the same number supports a Blue Lives Matter law that would make attacks on police a hate crime and increase the penalties for such attacks.

Sixty-eight percent (68%) of voters are concerned that deadly attacks on the police will lead to a shortage of police officers and reduce public safety where they live.

A whopping 84% of black voters polled are concerned about a shortage of cops on the streets.

More from Rasmussen:

Sixty-eight percent (68%) of voters are concerned that deadly attacks on the police will lead to a shortage of police officers and reduce public safety where they live, with 44% who are Very Concerned. Thirty percent (30%) don’t share that concern, but that includes only 14% who are Not At All Concerned.

Whites (63%) are bigger supporters of Blue Lives Matter laws than blacks (52%) and other minority voters (49%). But blacks (84%) are a lot more concerned than whites (66%) and other minorities (70%) about a potential shortage of police officers in their community.

Former House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy ripped Pelosi during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Story.”

“You can be 100% behind law and order and law enforcement, or you can be, in her case, 100 days behind them,” Gowdy said.

“It’s been about 100 days,” he told host Martha MacCallum. “In that time, she had time to compare cops to stormtroopers. She had time to call [House Minority Leader] Kevin McCarthy the ‘enemy of the state.’ She had time to get her hair done … but she had no time to defend law enforcement until the polls started tightening.”

Gowdy cited polling numbers as the likely motivator.

“It took 10,000 arrests, $2 billion in property damage and a couple of cops fighting for their lives to finally figure out that the numbers weren’t on her side,” he said.

Here’s a sampling of responses to Pelosi’s about-face from Twitter:
