If ever there was a sign that voters have pretty much given up, just look to a sheriff’s election in New Hampshire.
Aside from blind allegiance to party, voter apathy may be the number one thing that allows the swamp known as Washington, D.C., to flourish, and allows politicians you would allow to babysit your children to remain in office for decades.
In Cheshire County, N.H., a self-described “transsexual Satanist anarchist” won the Republican nomination for sheriff, and the winning candidate, Aria DiMezzo, mocked the electoral system, calling it “utterly and hopelessly broken” in a blog post.
“More than 4,000 people went into the voting booth on September 8 this week, and they all filled in the circle by my name despite knowing absolutely nothing about the person they were nominating to the most powerful law enforcement position in the county,” DiMezzo said Friday in a blog post. “That’s a level of recklessness of which any decent human being should be ashamed.”
“You don’t know anything about the people you’re voting for,” she added. “You’re just blindly voting for them because you trust in the party, you trust in the system. Well, the party is broken, and the system is broken. It’s all broken.”
And while many may agree with that sentiment, they won’t agree on much else.
DiMezzo ran on the campaign slogan “F*ck the Police.” And for what it’s worth, given that she has no chance of beating the popular incumbent Democratic sheriff running for his fifth term, she “wants to end the prosecution of drug crimes, sex work, illegal immigration, and anything else that she says do not have an actual victim,” Inside Sources reported.
The Satan-worshiper did run unopposed as the Republican candidate — in thousands of local races across the country where one party is dominant, the opposition doesn’t bother to run a candidate.
All of which opens up the opportunity seen with DiMezzo, who signed up to run as a Republican two days before the deadline when she learned an expected candidate in the party was not running, according to Inside Sources.
“I shouldn’t have won this freaking primary. I should have gotten crushed,” DiMezzo told the outlet.
In a tweet posted before the election, DiMezzo said the Cheshire County Republican Committee had organized a write-in campaign in opposition.
'It has been brought to my attention that the Cheshire County Republican Committee is organizing a write-in campaign against me. Many advocate voting for the Democrat over voting for me. Why are they so scared of freedom?' https://t.co/xkp6Turgsv pic.twitter.com/2LhUUrm0wR

Cheshire County GOP chairwoman Marilyn Huston explained that DiMezzo “came into the Republican party because he was unable to get onto a Libertarian ballot.”
Some in the Libertarian Party seem to live to gum up the works, or embarrass the Republican Party — it would seem that DiMezzo is among this cabal.
More from Inside Source:
DiMezzo comes from the Free Keene group of Libertarian activists that produced Nobody, a gubernatorial candidate who changed his name from Rich Paul to Nobody. She also hosts an internet radio show where she is referred to as “She-Male.” Free Keene started as an off-shoot of the Free State Project of Libertarians, but the Free State Project has since distanced itself from Free Keene.
Needless to say, the local Republican Party does not support the candidate.
“They’re clearly not on my side,” DiMezzo said.
