On the day Americans marked the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks by radicalized Islamic terrorists, Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel penned an op-ed reminding us of the importance of first responders.

Noting that Sept. 11 is a solemn day, McDaniel recalled the horror of that fateful day.

“It’s a day when we traditionally reflect and remember the lives cut far too short and pray for the families who continue to mourn the loss of nearly 3,000 loved ones,” she wrote. “Even now, almost two decades removed from the worst terrorist attack on American soil, the images of 9/11 are imprinted on our national memory as if it was yesterday.”

One of those indelible memories is the role first responders played, and the many who died in service to their community.

“Firefighters and police officers rushing into burning buildings,” McDaniel observed. “First responders working past the point of exhaustion. Americans risking their own lives to save the lives of others, often complete strangers.”

(The New York City Fire Department had 343 firefighters lose their lives, while the New York Police Department lost 23 officers, along with 37 Port Authority officers.)

Citing a similar “spirit of unity,” McDaniel called attention to the more recent effort to fight the coronavirus, before turning to the left’s ongoing campaign to undermine law enforcement.

“But amidst a global pandemic and nationwide shutdown, another threat to our safety has arisen — this time not from an enemy from a distant land, but from anarchists and rioters in our own backyards,” she said.

In response to the Black Lives Matter riots that have swept across the country, first responders once again find themselves at risk as they rush toward danger.

“Turning social unrest into violent crime, these anarchists have taken lives, decimated neighborhoods and ransacked businesses,” the chairwoman said. “Once more, brave first responders have sprung into action to protect their communities — this time without the warm welcome they were greeted with in crises past.”

“Our nation’s heroes — our police officers — are working around the clock to protect our neighborhoods, only to be shouted down, spat on, and much worse, by some of their fellow Americans,” McDaniel said. “It should go without saying, but our support for those who keep us safe should also extend to our nation’s police officers and law enforcement officials.”

Instead, she pointed out, “it has become fashionable in some circles to criticize law enforcement to serve some sort of political agenda.”

Citing today’s “antipathy and downright hostility towards police,” McDaniel said this is “not something that should be ignored or taken lightly.”

“Even in the midst of a campaign season, there are some issues that should be above the partisan fray,” she wrote. “Affirming our support for law enforcement should be one of them, and we should question any leader who doesn’t.”

Falling back on the “great American spirit” that has united the country before during troubling times, McDaniel called on Americans to “back the blue who protect us and defend our great nation.”

The great irony in all of this is that even when the left set up so-called “autonomous zones” and banned cops, when trouble comes they still call the police for help.

Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter that share the view that police officers play a vital role in our country and need to be adequately funded.
