South Carolina police have a suspect into custody after he allegedly stabbed the department’s chief in the face with an ice pick.
According to multiple reports. Chief Franco Fuda of Bonneau said he was at his home Monday when he heard a knock on his front door.
After going outside to meet with the suspect, he reportedly told the chief Fuda was “going to die today” before lunging and stabbing the chief below his left eye with an ice pick as Fuda dialed 911.
The chief noted that the suspect, who was eventually identified as Forrest Bowman by Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputies, then fled the scene and holed up in his mobile home as officers moved in.
A responding SWAT team instructed Bowman to come out of his home a number of times before sending in a robot to determine his location.
Shortly thereafter, the team made an entry and discovered Bowman hiding between a wall and a mattress. Reports noted that a judge denied bond Tuesday evening after Bowman had been charged with attempted murder, assault, and other charges.
A spokesman with the sheriff’s office told Live5 that officers also lobbed a tear gas grenade into the mobile home prior to entry.
Police also said that Bowman had been arrested recently after he threatened officers and the pastor of a local church.
He was released on bond a short while after his arrest.
One woman told Live5 she has known the suspect most of his life.
“I used to feed him at my house, he was a good friend of my sons,” Debbie Hood told the station. ”I’ve known him since he was a child. But he’s mixed up I guess with the wrong crowd. It’s sad. It’s very sad.”
Police records indicate that Bowman had been out on bond after threatening Fuda two years ago. It’s not clear why he has never been brought to trial in that case.
A Live5 reporter on the scene noted that Bowman was naked and hollering when he was taken from his home.
Attacks against and murders of police officers have both increased steadily over the past couple of years, as violence rises around the country.
In 2020 thus far, 36 police officers have been murdered in the line of duty so far this year, according to FBI statistics, compared with 30 officers by this time last year. Eight fell victim to premeditated attacks and ambushes.
Meanwhile, the ratio of police officers to the general public has been dropping as well. In 2009, there were 2.5 officers per 100,000 people; by 2018, that figure had fallen to 2.1 per 100,000, rising only slightly after dropping to 2.0 per 100,000 the previous year.
For the whole of 2019, “89 law enforcement officers were killed in line-of-duty incidents,” the FBI reported in May. “Of these, 48 officers died as a result of felonious acts, and 41 officers died in accidents.”
Of those officers, 45 were men, three were women; 40 were white, seven were black, and one was Asian.
“In 2016, an officer was assaulted in America on an average of every 10 minutes, can you believe that?” Trump said on May 15, 2018, a claim rated as “Mostly True” by Politifact. “It’s outrageous, and it’s unacceptable. We must end the attacks on our police, and we must end them right now. We believe criminals who kill our police should get the death penalty. Bring it forth.”
