In comments that reek of political bias, Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said that a Trump campaign event in the state on Thursday is “very distressing,” but a Biden campaign event planned for Wednesday was no problem at all, according to a report.
The difference? Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign would be encouraging attendees to wear masks, ostensibly to ‘slow the spread’ of COVID-19, but President Donald Trump’s campaign may not.
The highly criticized and controversial governor whose continuous coronavirus lockdowns have drawn GOP rebukes and lawsuits made her remarks during an interview on CNN Tuesday as President Trump held a rally in Winston-Salem, N.C.
In video clips of Trump campaign events in Florida and North Carolina shown by CNN host Anderson Cooper, scores of Trump’s supporters were not wearing masks but many were. According to the AARP, which tracks statewide mask mandates, Florida does not have one but North Carolina does.
In her CNN interview, Whitmer said repeatedly she was “following the science” regarding the mask mandate in her state.
“It’s distressing, to say the least,” she said in response to a question from Cooper about how she can enforce the mandate at Trump’s campaign event. “We’ve been following the science here in Michigan. We have rules to ensure that we don’t have super-spreader events.”

“Yet, we anticipate that [Trump] will be descending on this state and perhaps encourage people to come mask-less and come together in the ways that we’ve seen them happening across the country, and I think this is very distressing,” she continued.
Cooper asked her if her office was in communication with the Trump campaign regarding the mask mandate, but she did not answer directly.
“I don’t doubt that there will be people who want to show up at that [Trump] event and will take the lead from the man himself and drop their guard and could subject themselves to COVID-19.”
“I would love to see the leader of our country embrace masks and encourage people to do the right thing.”
Asked about Biden’s event, Whitmer — who was reportedly once under consideration as the nominee’s running mate and could still be under consideration for some Cabinet post in a Biden administration — completely changed her tune.
“The fact of the matter is we’ve got Joe Biden coming into town…I know that they are scrupulously following the science, they want to keep their supporters and the general public safe,” she said.
Democrats have routinely blasted President Trump for holding campaign rallies, accusing him of staging “super-spreader” events, while at the same time excusing mass protests and rioting.
Also, the ‘science’ regarding the wearing of masks has never been settled. Before COVID-19, physicians and health experts disagreed over the effectiveness of masks to stop the spread of viruses, mostly because people do not properly utilize them or because certain masks are ineffective in stopping some viruses.
“Face masks in public spaces do not provide any greater protection to the population,” Johan Carlson from the Swedish Public Health Agency Folkhälsomyndigheten said in May.
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven added, “There is a risk of a false sense of security, that you believe that you can’t be infected if you wear a face mask.”
His view was shared by Case Western Reserve University Immunologist Dr. Mark Cameron in April — a view that came from studying earlier outbreaks of coronaviruses including SARS.
As for Whitmer, she has been one of the most vocal — and controversial — advocates for coronavirus shutdowns and restrictions including her social distancing and mask mandates. Her orders have regularly sparked protests both at the state capital in Lansing and at her residence.
She also got pushback from comments she made during her address to the Democratic National Convention when she claimed the administration of former President Barack Obama and Biden “saved the auto industry” in 2009 so that car plants could go on to produce COVID-19 supplies during the Trump administration.
In fact, the Obama administration inherited a bailout plan from George W. Bush’s outgoing administration.
