Firearms instructor shows critics why cops are trained to shoot so fast, even if suspect has back turned

Firearms instructor Mike Brown of the Chicago-based Security Training Concepts training school has an important question for critics who complain about the police opening fire on criminal suspects whose backs are turned to them.

What Brown would like to know is how fast YOU could react if someone’s back was to you, and this someone suddenly decided to blow a bullet through your brain.

Watch, and learn!

“I want to talk about unfortunate circumstances when you got a person behind. It doesn’t have to be the police,” Brown said after first introducing himself.

“It could be you as a citizen, and you walked up, and you see somebody in your house, and you’re behind, so you don’t see their hands. How fast do you think it would take for me to just go on ahead and simply shoot?”

He then drew a gun faster than a freight train and opened fire multiple times — and with real bullets — on a hanging target.

“Did that take long at all? That didn’t take long at all. Do you think you would be able to respond fast enough?” he then asked.

Stunningly, some members of his audience began shouting, “Yeah.”

Brown then began firing at the target again even faster than before — and this time it appeared his message kind of resonated with them.

“How fast could you respond? Seriously, how fast could you respond? Do you think you’ll be able to respond fast enough?” he asked afterward.

Again the stubborn audience members responded win the affirmative, but this time they seemed less convinced.

Possibly,” one said.

Brown then asked the audience to put themselves in the shoes of a cop who’s focused on issuing commands like “put your hands up” when suddenly THIS happens:

And you’re dead …

According to data maintained by the FBI, at least 34 police officers have already been “feloniously killed” this year. Last year 48 officers were feloniously killed.

While the details of their killings are unclear, what’s evident from Brown’s demonstration is that every officer in America is always only seconds away from death when dealing with a suspect, particularly one with his/her back to the officer.

“Do you see my hands?” Brown asked as he stood with his back to the audience.

“No,” the audience members replied.

“So you don’t know what I have in front, do you?” Brown then added before suddenly opening fire on the target again.

“F–ked up, ain’t it?” he concluded.

Welcome to the life of a cop, ladies and gentlemen …

This is a reality that for some reason is never acknowledged when police officers open fire and kill a criminal suspect.

As a group of Washington, D.C. officers were following up on reports of a man with a gun this past Wednesday, they encountered a vehicle containing several men, including a young black man named Deon Kay.

“Officers responded to the scene to ‘investigate a man with a gun’ and found a group of people around a vehicle, according to a police statement,” DCist reported.

“Two people fled on foot, and one ‘brandished a gun,’ police said. According to that account, an officer fired once and hit Kay, while the second person escaped.”

Kay was subsequently transferred to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Despite Kay having been armed, protests erupted:

As of this weekend, the protests are reportedly still ongoing, and this despite the Metropolitan Police Department having published bodycam footage showing Kay wielding a gun during the encounter.

Watch:

Now just imagine what Kay could have done with that gun. Imagine just how many people would be mourning their deceased law enforcement family members today had Kay opened fire and gunned down one, two or more cops.

These are the risks faced by cops daily. They’re also the same risks that were faced by the officers who tried to apprehend accused sex abuser Jacob Blake late last month but wound up opening fire when he turned his back to them and reached into his car.

It was later discovered that Blake had had a knife in the vehicle. But what if he’d reached for a weapon? What then? Would YOU have been fast enough to react before he killed you? Mike Brown would like to know.
