The term ‘white Hispanic’ began trending on social media Tuesday to describe the race of a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputy after he shot and killed a black man a day earlier.
Local reports noted that the man, identified as Dijon Kizzee, 29, was riding a bike and was stopped for a “vehicle code violation” by officers. As they approached, the suspect took off running and dropped items he was carrying, including a handgun.
“He had a towel and he had his clothes and his pants couldn’t even stay up, so that’s what made him slow down so they had enough to get him,” a woman who said she knew the victim and saw what happened told CBS Los Angeles. “They didn’t have to shoot him more than 5 times, they could have shot him one time in the leg.
“What’s the use of having the prison system if y’all are just gonna kill us,” the woman said, crying. “What are y’all here for? Who are you protecting?”
A spokesman for the sheriff’s department described what led to the shooting.
“Our suspect was holding some items of clothing in his hands, punched one of the officers in the face and then dropped the items in his hands,” Lt. Brandon Dean said. “The deputies noticed that inside the clothing items that he dropped was a black semiautomatic handgun, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”
Deputies later recovered a handgun from the scene.
Smartphone video taken after the shooting shows deputies attempting to provide first aid to the suspect. Shortly after the shooting as word began to spread through the community, about 100 protesters gathered to denounce police.
“How many more times do we have to gather out here, mourning the loss of our brothers and sisters?” one of them asked.
According to ABC News, the suspect allegedly fought deputies and struck one of them.
“During the contact, a fight ensued between the suspect and deputies,” the department said.
At some point, one of the deputies allegedly. involved in the shooting was identified as being Hispanic, but was described by black activist and self-described “race-baiter” Tariq Nasheed as being a “white Hispanic,” which drew wide condemnation online.

The term ‘white Hispanic’ was initially created to describe George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. CNN has generally been credited for creating the term, critics said, to add a racial element to the incident as a way to incite anger.
“The term ‘white Hispanic’ was coined by the media after outlets wrongly labeled Zimmerman white; Zimmerman’s father is white, and his mother is Hispanic,” then-Breitbart News Editor-at-Large Ben Shapiro wrote in July 2013.
“On March 8, 2012, the Associated Press wrote, ‘The neighborhood watch leader is white.’ When it came out that he was not, media outlets including CNN began labeling Zimmerman a ‘white Hispanic,’ in order to maintain the false narrative that the killing was race-based,” he added.
