Under proposed bill, rioters would lose government benefits, be forced to pay for police costs

An ironically titled bill drafted by Indiana Rep. Jim Banks seeks to strip the Democrat Party’s beloved so-called “peaceful protesters” of their unemployment benefits amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Called the “Support Peaceful Protest Act,” the bill would specifically target “protesters” who’ve been convicted of committing a federal crime while “protesting,” by temporarily eliminating their unemployment benefit eligibility and also requiring them to pay restitution to federal police officers.

“In the case of an individual convicted of a Federal offense related to the individual’s conduct at and during the course of a protest with respect to which a Federal law enforcement officer was engaged in policing activity, the court shall, in addition to the penalty for such conviction, order the individual to pay an order of restitution to the appropriate Federal law enforcement agency in an amount that is equal to the cost of such policing activity, as determined by the court,” part one of the bill reads.

Part two adds that once convicted, the rioter will become “ineligible for any Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation under section 2104 of the CARES Act (15 U.S.C. 9023) or any other Federal supplemental unemployment compensation during the COVID–19 public health emergency.”

In a press release accompanying the bill’s introduction last week, Banks said that it was time to “cut” off the unemployment hooligans who’ve been wasting their time destroying their communities instead of looking for a job.

“Antifa thugs are descending on suffering communities, disrupting peaceful protests and leaving violence, looting and vandalism in their wake. They turned Milwaukee, Seattle and Portland into warzones, and now they’re moving the chaos to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Who knows which community is next?” he said.

“Due to enhanced federal benefits, taxpayers are giving wages to jobless rioters that are destroying our communities. We need to cut them off from their funding and make them feel the full financial consequences of their actions.”

Thanks to the CARES Act, some unemployed Americans are “earning” more from unemployment benefits than they were making on the job.

In tweets posted Saturday, he added, “We’re paying the mob to burn down America, and I’m trying to stop it!”

The tweets provoked an immediate backlash from liberal  Democrats, who for some reason have in recent weeks taken to fiercely defending every type of scumbag imaginable, from accused rapists to animal abusers and violent rioting extremists.

The problem with this blatant insanity is that it’s become mainstream.

Case in point: On Thursday, NPR, one of America’s most powerful media organizations — albeit a publicly funded one — published a glowing interview with a dangerously far-left zealot who supports looting and has disdain for small business owners.

The zealot, author Vicky Osterweil, went so far as to claim that the idea that small business owners need to be respected is a “right-wing myth.”

“It’s actually a Republican myth that has, over the last 20 years, really crawled into even leftist discourse: that the small business owner must be respected, that the small business owner creates jobs and is part of the community. But that’s actually a right-wing myth,” she said.

And so it’s perfectly OK to loot struggling small business owners because it’s “ultimately about attacking like modes of oppression that exist in the community.”

Keep in mind her words were published in NPR …
