Freshman Democrat Rep. Sean Casten, the same guy who’d previously smeared decorated Navy SEAL Rep. Dan Crenshaw as a “racist” and compared President Donald Trump to deceased terrorist Obama bin Laden, is back in the spotlight again.
In a dehumanizing, possibly sexist remark made during a webinar last weekend, he suggested to a college student that the only reason Second Amendment supporters want so desperately to own firearms is to make for up for their allegedly “small genitals.”
“If you are a constitutional originalist, unless you’re a member of a well-regulated militia, tell me why you need to own a gun? Having small genitals is not a sufficient reason to own a gun,” the Illinois congressman said.

In a tweet posted a couple of days later, he claimed his remarks had been a “joke about the toxic-masculinity that has injected this whole debate” vis-a-vis the Second Amendment rights afforded to every American citizen via the U.S. Constitution.
He also took a shot at the “right-wing nutjobs” who’d taken offense to his remarks.

Included among those who took offense was his Republican congressional challenger in the 2020 race, Jeanne M. Ives, who just happens to be a woman — one whom it appears proudly owns a firearm for her own personal protection.
“Maybe Sean Casten thinks overgrown frat boys are cool. On behalf of women everywhere: overgrown frat boys are not cool,” she said in a scathing statement last week.
“They are pathetic, and they can’t be trusted to make sound decisions on other people’s lives. It is clear he is not the moderate we were sold in 2018. It’s well past time that Sean Casten answered for his deeply concerning rhetoric and radical policy positions.”

According to polling records maintained by Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight, the last time Casten’s district was polled in late 2019, he was trailing Ives by 10 points.

With a mouth like his, there’s no telling how much he’s trailing her by now.
According to Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy’s Young Guns recruitment program, Ives has a lot of experience with weapons.
“Representative Ives graduated in the West Point Class of 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. She went on to serve in the US Army,” her Young Guns biography reads.
“Her assignments included platoon leader and headquarters detachment commander for transportation units in Germany and ROTC instructor at Wheaton College. She resigned from the Army in 1993 to raise her children.”
One of her top issues is the Second Amendment rights enjoyed by Americans — rights that Casten seems to greatly resent. In fact, he’s previously expressed support for Justice John Paul Stevens’ decision to dissent in the landmark Second Amendment case Heller v. DC, according to Ives:

The backlash that’s been aimed at his way — particularly from women — suggests that no, this is not what the American people want.
