Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton says she is teaching her three kids that they are “white children of privilege” and that they should “erode that privilege throughout their lives” to ensure that everyone has the right to vote.
Clinton, 40, made her comments during a “Women for Biden” video conference call Friday with Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), one of Congress’ Left-wing “Squad” members, as the two were talking about past instances of voter suppression while claiming similar challenges still exist today, despite there being no evidence of it.
The Stanford University-educated global health advocate explained that she has taught her children about the relevance of the 19th Amendment, which was ratified on Aug. 18, 1920, and which guaranteed the right of women to vote.
But she added that the amendment was not enough and was “incomplete” because Americans are still struggling, allegedly, for their right to vote, Just The News reported.
“My children are young, but we believe that they’re young, but still citizens,” she said. “So we talked about the ratification of the 19th Amendment, and Women’s Equality Day, and about how fundamentally incomplete that victory was. So not to say it wasn’t a victory and it wasn’t important, but that it was so fundamentally flawed.”
Following the ratification of the 19th Amendment, poll taxes, literacy tests and other impediments to voting imposed by some states continued to disenfranchise immigrants, minorities, and some women.
But the 1964 Civil Rights Act swept away those qualifiers. In the decades since, there have been relatively few cases of legitimate voter suppression prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice, indicating they are exceedingly rare.
“Voting rights are constitutional rights, and they’re part of what it means to be an American,” then-U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in October 2018. “The Department of Justice has been entrusted with an indispensable role in securing these rights for the people of this nation.
“This year we are using every lawful tool that we have, both civil and criminal, to protect the rights of millions of Americans to cast their vote unimpeded at one of more than 170,000 precincts across America,” he added.
However, claims of voter suppression of minorities, especially, remains a Democratic talking point and is often revived ahead of elections to hammer Republicans who supposedly guilty of it.
Nevertheless, Clinton claimed that substantial hurdles to voting remain.
“These fights aren’t just in our history books. These are still active, ongoing fights,” she said.
“You know, 40 percent of Americans with disabilities report that they have real challenges voting in person,” she claimed. “And so in states where there haven’t been, kind of, no-excuse absentee voting or where there hasn’t been the introduction of early voting yet, you know, it still isn’t, kind of, easy, fair, or equal for many Americans to vote.”
Clinton noted further that she wants her kids — five-year-old Charlotte, four-year-old Aidan, and one-year-old Jasper — to be conscious of their privilege and to use it to fight on behalf of others.
“I think it’s really important that my children understand that,” she said. “And I think it’s particularly important that they understand that as white children of privilege because I want them to erode that privilege throughout their lives to ensure more people are enfranchised and that equality isn’t just an ideal.”
Pressley agreed and praised Clinton for instructing her children as Pressley’s mother did for her.
“You’re really modeling that which my mother certainly believed, which is that a parent is a child’s first teacher. And I so appreciate that you’re providing that full education because we know that often there is a revisionist history or a sanitizing or filtering of history that does not tell the whole story,” she said.
“But confronting that past, that’s really how we get to truth and reconciliation. And we fortify ourselves to continue to do the work to make sure that we are dismantling those barriers that still exist and that we are in a cooperative affront to the voter suppression and intimidation tactics that are still very real today — what I would consider, equivalent to like modern-day jelly bean counting,” she added.
