MSNBC host Rachel Maddow broke away from a Wednesday night speech by GOP Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota to ‘fact-check’ her claim that Democrat-run cities are rife with violence, rioting, and looting.

And interestingly, Maddow’s fact-check guest was Mayor Jenny Durkan of Seattle, who was forced to dismantle the deadly ‘CHOP zone’ in June as well as deal with riots and looting in recent weeks.

Noem, who spoke at the Republican National Convention, condemned the mob violence taking place in major cities around the country — all of which are led by Democrat majorities and mayors — while warning against “the path taken by Democrats and their radical supporters,” according to the Daily Caller.

“…[A]s we have said over the course of this coverage, we will interject when we feel like there is something that’s important and deliberate and very wrong that should be corrected just so that we feel responsible about our broadcast,” Maddow began.

“In this case, Governor Noem just said ‘from Seattle and Portland to Washington and New York, Democrat-run cities across this country are being overrun by violent mobs. The violence is rampant … people that can afford to flee have fled,’” Maddow continued, as she introduced Durkan, who spoke by phone.

The Seattle mayor condemned what she described as the “caricature” of major U.S. cities, which she claimed, “is not only wrong, it is purposefully wrong.”

“I think she needs to get off Twitter and get off Fox News and come see our city,” Durkan said. “Seattle is a city that I raise my two children in and I would not have raised them anywhere else. They are fine young men as are their friends. Our violent crime is down 5 percent this year. We have — people are not leaving Seattle. In fact, again, our housing prices continue to increase, and the people moving here are young families.”

However, Townhall correspondent Julio Rosas — who has reported on the violence in Dem-run cities — begged to differ.

As to crime, Seattle Business Magazine reported a year ago that crime, along with drug use and homelessness, has been rising big time as well.

“Downtown crime is increasing at an alarming rate: City of Seattle crime data for downtown Seattle indicate a jump in ‘person crimes’ (aggravated assault, robbery, rape and homicide) of 43 percent between 2016 and 2018. In the downtown commercial district, there was a total of 568 person crimes in 2018, up from 397 in 2016, Seattle Police Department records show,” the magazine reported.

Following a visit to downtown Seattle in April 2018, meeting planner and senior director of meetings and expositions for the American Pharmacists Association Windy Christner “witnessed two men urinating, one man who had defecated on himself and an addict passed out on the sidewalk,” the magazine reported.

“Once, Christner crossed the street to escape someone shouting profanities. Another man aggressively pursued a member of Christner’s team, asking for cash,” it added.

The three-day visit left her uneasy and fearful that attendees to an upcoming meeting in the city wouldn’t be safe.

“I am empathetic for the plight of those in need, and realize that Seattle is by no means alone,” Christner wrote in a letter to Visit Seattle President and CEO Tom Norwalk following her visit.

He responded that Seattle is “way past the tipping point” regarding street crime.

As for the CHOP Zone, the city was forced to dismantle it earlier this summer after it became a hotbed of crime and a virtual shooting gallery. Also, rioting and anti-police violence committed by Black Lives Matter protesters are driving officers out of the city, including their chief, Carmen Best, who resigned after the socialist city council voted to cut her salary.

This missed fact-check with Durkan isn’t the first time this week that Maddow has come up short in her effort to put the RNC in a critical light.

On Monday she attempted to fact-check President Donald Trump following his announcement that a new coronavirus treatment recently approved by his administration was not green-lighted by the FDA or top immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci.

“The White House did pressure the [Food and Drug Administration] to approve convalescent plasma under emergency use. It’s against the recommendation of FDA scientists and the NIH and Dr. Fauci that they did that,” she said.

“There isn’t any strong scientific evidence that suggests that convalescent plasma in antibodies is actually a sound therapeutic that’s going to be of value for treating people with coronavirus,” she added.

But Zach Parkinson, deputy director of communications and research for the 2020 Trump campaign, tweeted a video of Fauci making an appeal about three weeks ago for Americans who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate their plasma to “help save lives.”

“If you’ve recovered from COVID-19, your plasma has antibodies that may help others fight COVID,” Fauci says. “Please donate plasma now. You can literally save lives.”
