NJ gym owners, in brilliant chess move, designate facility an official campaign rally location

The resilient owners of the Atilis Gym have taken their dispute with Democrat New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy to a creative new level: They have designated the facility an official campaign rally location for GOP U.S. Senate candidate Rik Mehta, a healthcare policy expert.

Everyone who enters the gym is considered a campaign volunteer.

Ideally, the location thus should now enjoy the protections of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as well as the equivalent provisions of state law.

“Gov. Murphy turned this into a political chess game. What we said is, checkmate, governor,” Mehta remarked.

Co-owner Ian Smith told Fox & Friends that controversy over keeping the gym’s doors open never intended to get political.

“When we started this, we took a stand for our constitutional rights and for the rights of all small business owners throughout the country. And it wasn’t intended to become political. We were trying to offer a solution to a problem where government was failing. It turned political. And that was because of Governor Murphy’s actions. So now we, we made it political just as much as he has.”

According to Mehta, who is running against Cory “Spartacus” Booker, Murphy is harming small businesses and crushing the American Dream with his arbitrary edicts as unemployment soars in the Garden State.

“It’s time to put policy over politics. We’re really tired of the one-sided control that the governor has. We’ve asked many times…where’s the science? …We flattened the curve, and they keep moving the goalpost.”

“It’s palpable hypocrisy. The governor has not even told us how he makes decisions. He makes the decisions then asks his health professionals to find science to support those decisions.”

The gym has installed high-tech coronavirus screening measures, and to date, and more than 25,000 members/attendees have been tested with zero positives, according to co-owner Frank Trumbetti. The facility doesn’t require masks.

Doing the bidding of lockdown-obsessed Murphy local officials revoked the gym’s business license earlier this month, and owners Trumbetti, 51, and  Smith, 33, face criminal charges and fines for defying Murphy’s dictatorial COVID orders. They have defiantly stayed opened and reopened despite Murphy’s efforts to shut them down.

“We asked for the science numerous times in court,” Smith added. “They have not produced a single shred of evidence, that would show a gym, or indoor dining, or movie theater, which are Murphy’s three last industries to be allowed to operate. He has not put forth a single shred of evidence to prove that we’re any more of a threat to the public than the public transportation running at 100% capacity or any of the other things that he selected to be safe.”

Smith has previously suggested that a gym is a place where people strengthen their immune system as a way to ward off illness.

Parenthetically, earlier this month, President Trump thwarted a grandstanding reporter by classifying his press conference in Bedminster, N.J., as a peaceful protest.
