Though most voters plan to cast a ballot either for President Donald Trump or Democratic nominee Joe Biden in November, there is another candidate under consideration by a growing number of Americans: Jesus.
Scores of campaign-style “Jesus 2020” signs are springing up in yards across the country, with more than 5,000 of them being shipped to California, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, after a campaign to get them out began at the Sampey Memorial Baptist Church in Ramer, Ala.
“People need Jesus with everything that’s going on,” said Joyce Hubbard, a Jesus 2020 co-organizer, told Fox News. “He’s the only one we can count on. He’s the one that keeps his promises. He’s already the winner.”
Hubbard said that she and friend Martha Sikes came up with the ‘campaign’ while attending their small church after it reopened in May, though a number of members remain sheltered at home amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
They said their plan was to spur a revival of hope in times that are dark, uncertain, and tumultuous.
“If everyone would just focus on Jesus right now, everything would just fall into place and we wouldn’t have the problems we have,” Hubbard told the network. “He’s the only way.”
The signs are also available through a Jesus 2020 Facebook page, which says that it “is not a fundraiser.” A post on the page indicates that the signs are made by a local printer in Montgomery and that “all orders must go through them.”
“We don’t have to be some megachurch. All it takes is a spark and we want to set fires everywhere,” Hubbard added. “We want Jesus’s name out there.”
The pair told Fox News they have had churches, as well as entire neighborhoods, order some of the signs. Hubbard said that “once one person gets them, everyone wants one.”
“It’s been awesome,” she continued. “It’s uplifted people so much.
“People are just looking for something to cling onto. Not the signs itself, but just Jesus. I mean that’s what we need,” Hubbard added.
According to WIS10, more than 6,200 signs have been printed and sent to nine states and a small number of cities. Church leaders are also handing out the yard signs in a local Walmart parking lot, the station reported.
“We wanted to take a stand and revive hearts that have felt despair and hopelessness. We need Jesus! We decided that we would start a campaign for Jesus,” Hubbard told the Alabama Gazette.
“We’ve got to speak up against the negative that’s going on in this country. There is a bunch of evil in our country. We can’t let it continue and do nothing,” added Sikes, according to the outlet. “We hoped it would move. We expected great things. Watching it spread … it’s just amazing to watch it take spark and move on throughout our neighborhood and beyond.”
“It’s gone much farther than we thought. People are calling about signs all the time. So many people are excited to get the signs,” Hubbard said. “Our goal is to get other churches involved in the experience, so they can order signs to see everywhere, and people can see that people believe in Jesus.”
