U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Florida Democrat, stands accused of allegedly assaulting a 16-year-old volunteer for her primary rival.

According to the teen, the incumbent is “a monster.”

There is no indication as yet that a video of the incident exists or that a police report was filed ( Sidebar: Florida Dems are known for particularly dirty politics).

Opponent Jen Perelman, who evidently is challenging Wasserman Schultz from the left (if that’s even possible, given how radical most rank-and-file Democrats have become), put Wasserman Schultz on notice via social media that the alleged scuffle was unacceptable.

“I’m only going to say this once. if you want to put your hands on anyone, try it with me. Don’t you EVER touch my volunteers. We’re winning this race on Tuesday.

“For those who want context: Debbie physically shoved one of my volunteers handing out palm cards & then verbally accosted her for calling out her record on the environment. This will NOT be tolerated.”

The alleged victim, self-described political advocate and climate activist Martina Velasquez, explained her version of what happened in a TikTok video that also made its way to Twitter:

“Right now, Jen Perelman is up against a monster. And her name is Debbie Wasserman Schultz. And I want to tell you all about my experience with  Debbie yesterday…when I was handing out palm cards to voters, and explaining how Debbie was not endorsed by any activist other than the Sierra Club, which is historically racist, she ended up shoving me more than once, and calling me a liar to my face…that’s exactly why we have to get her out…we need change.”

The Florida primary is Tuesday, August 18, although this encounter apparently occurred during the state’s early voting period which ended on Sunday, August 16.

A palm card is a form of campaign literature that concisely promotes a candidate for office.

The contest between Wasserman Schultz and Perelman is over who will emerge as the Democrat nominee to represent the 23rd congressional district in the Fort Lauderdale area. Wasserman Schultz was first elected to Congress in 2004. At this point, the seat is strongly favored to remain in Democrat hands in the general election.

Wasserman Schultz is the former chair of the Democratic National Committee, but resigned under pressure around the time of the 2016 presidential nominating convention after leaked emails showed that the party hierarchy was strongly favoring Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. During her tenure as chair, she was a regular and abrasive presence on the cable news networks.
