Clueless San Fran officials can’t roll back plan to house homeless in booze-stocked hotels fast enough

For some reason, liberals always have to learn things the hard way …

This past spring, San Francisco city officials began housing the homeless in local hotels and delivering publicly funded alcohol, tobacco, and medical cannabis to them to keep them happily drunk/high and isolated away from the coronavirus.

Shocking nobody, a report emerged this week that the program’s been an utter “disaster” and that it’s now rightly being phased out.

What, though, was the trigger that finally prompted San Francisco’s far-left political leaders to finally embrace common sense?

Listen to Bay Area reporter Erica Sandberg provide the answer below to Tucker Carlson, the host of Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight“:

It turns out that one of the many hotels that San Francisco officials had chosen to transform into drug dens for the homeless had then been converted by the homeless into a meth lab. Who could have predicted that!?

“Police arrested two adults accused of operating a low-level meth lab at a San Francisco hotel designated as a safe shelter for people on quarantine, at risk for COVID-19, or without housing,” local station KTVU reported last week.

“The call came in about a strong chemical odor coming from a hotel room and officers responded to the Civic Center Motor Inn about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Police and residents had to wait for a hazmat team to determine the safety of the site.”

Speaking to Carlson about the whole project, Sandberg said it was a complete disaster, though she maintains it could have worked had some common sense been applied.

“It was basically a disaster, and it’s such a shame because it could have worked out. … [P]eople were given rooms; unfortunately, they were also given a tremendous amount of drug paraphernalia, so you’re talking everything from needles to meth pipes, crack pipes, foil to smoke fentanyl with, and because of that it turned into a just a chaotic horrible mess,” she said.

She believes a smarter strategy would have been to “use these hotels as sober places, you know, they could be places for recovery, mental health issues, but instead it was the opposite, and so it turned out to be a complete disaster.”

“This was actually a recipe for disaster. You make sure that people can do these substances that are already ruining their lives, just to keep them into a hotel room and far away from the general population, what’s going to happen … the answer is so obvious, it’s shocking that nobody kind of put those two things together,” she continued.

“Now of course the rest of the community did. We knew. The city of San Francisco knew. It was the city leaders, the officials … who kind of came in and said, ‘oh, we know better, we’re going to do this and it’s going to work out great.’ Well, guess what, it didn’t.”

And it never does, though Democrat politicians like the ones who control everything in San Francisco never seem to learn their lesson.

Over in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio, also a Democrat, has also been housing homeless residents in hotels throughout the city.

While he hasn’t resorted to doling out free alcohol and drugs to them — not yet, at least — he has allowed the homeless to turn the Upper West Side into a hotbed of drug activity, alcohol consumption, public urination and SEX OFFENDERS.

“It’s the drugs. We see people inebriated, there are registered sex offenders. Sometimes I go running in the morning and I’ll see, frankly, needles on the ground,” Upper West Side resident Alison Morpurgo, a mother of three teenagers, said to local station WNBC last week.

Listen:

That’s right. Among the vagrants now crowding the hotels and streets of Upper West Side NYC are convicted sex offenders, according to an investigation by local station WABC. And to make matters worse, de Blasio has no intention to relocate most of them.

“A handful of convicted ‘sexually violent’ level 2 sex offenders who recently moved into an Upper West Side hotel that is now set up as a homeless shelter will likely stay there, over the objections of neighbors,” the station reported.

The offenders were originally tracked down and outed by Mike Mishkin, the owner of ILoveTheUpperWestSide.com.

“It’s dangerous, it’s horrifying, and it’s a very real threat. If you are a registered sex offender or if you are bringing drugs into the neighborhood with children, that’s what people have a problem with,” local resident Jenna McIntyre Cohan, also a mother of three children, all of them under the age of 10, said to the station.

She added that her kids’ school is only a block away from one of the hotels.

It should be noted that policies like this are virtually non-existent in Republican-controlled areas.
