In what is being seen as an underwhelming selection, presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee Joe Biden announced Wednesday that Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., will be his vice-presidential running mate.
As with most things involving the 77-year-old former vice president, the roll-out of the announcement was beset with peculiarities.
The Biden campaign posted a photo on Instagram of Biden sitting smartly at a desk as he calls Harris to inform her that she just won the VP lottery, but there were a few irregularities that caught the eye of astute observers.
The first thing that jumps out, as noted by Benny Johnson, the chief creative officer at Turning Point USA, is that Biden used a script to speak with Harris.
Johnson also pointed out that the Biden is holding the iPhone upside down, meaning the speaker at the bottom of the phone was directed toward the laptop, before calling attention to a framed political cartoon on the desk of a man screaming, “WHY ME?!”
3 VERY IMPORTANT THINGS about this photo of Joe Biden calling Kamala to offer her VP spot:
1. Biden has to read from a script that is clearly visible
2. Biden does not know how to hold an iPhone (it’s upside down)

In the caption of the Instagram post — seen below — Biden called Harris “a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants.”
Biden also referenced a relationship with his late son, Beau Biden.
“Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau, I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse,” the caption said. “I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.”

I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate. Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau. I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.
The choice of Harris is interesting given that she ripped Biden in a primary debate for working with segregationists and opposing busing, and also told the former vice president it “was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country.”
The senator also said last year that she believed several women who came forward to allege that Biden had touched them inappropriately.
But then, Biden boxed himself in by declaring that he would only select a woman, and the radical left base expected that choice to be a woman of color. While Harris may be a rather unaccomplished lawmaker, she checks both the race and gender boxes.
On that note, New York Post columnist Michael Goodwin opined that his selection is likely because “the lack of enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton among black voters helped sink her four years ago.”
“He needed to shore up his party’s most important and reliable bloc, so the intrigue was really about which black woman he would select,” he wrote.
Pointing to Biden’s “obvious mental and physical frailties,” Goodwin said “there was a good chance that the running mate could become president within a first term, should the Dems prevail. The president-in-waiting, as even Biden supporters put it.”
The Trump campaign jumped on the script seen in the photo, tweeting: “Joe Biden Needed A Script to Understand Why His Handlers Chose Kamala Harris. Biden is an empty vessel for the radical left.”

Richard Grenell, the former U.S. Ambassador to Germany who served briefly as the Acting Director of National Intelligence in the Trump administration, responded to Biden relying on the script to call Harris, as well.
“This is so sad, actually,” he tweeted.

The Federalist’s Sean Davis suggested sarcastically that the script’s purpose was to remind Biden who he was talking to, a play on all the questions about the candidate’s mental agility.
In another interesting twist, Jack Posobiec, a correspondent for One America News Network, called attention to MSNBC apparently doctoring the photo by blocking the lower portion that showed the script.
They blurred the phone too, which he was holding upside down.

But then, the network has a tough assignment trying to drag the Biden-Harris ticket across the finish line in November.
Here are a few other responses from Twitter:
This is pretty scary

I can’t get over the fact that Biden’s staff had to write a script for him so he’d know why he was picking Kamala Harris as his VP.
