Trump confronts reporters to their faces on why they love Fauci and not him

Since Trump administration official Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, boasts a positive overall approval rating, shouldn’t President Donald Trump and his administration boast one as well?

The president posed this question during a coronavirus briefing Wednesday after he was asked by Fox News chief White House correspondent John Roberts to explain the reasoning behind some anti-Fauci tweets he’d reportedly posted a day before.

“Mr. President, last night, you made tweets. … You said that Dr. Fauci misled the country about hydroxychloroquine. How so?” Roberts asked.

The president replied with a lengthy spiel about how he likes and gets along with Fauci — though he doesn’t agree with him on everything — before turning to the doctor’s high approval rating.

Listen:

He’s got this high approval rating. So why don’t I have a high approval rating and the administration with respect to the virus?” Trump bluntly asked.

“We should have a very high … because what we’ve done in terms of … I was just reading off about the masks and the gowns and the ventilators and numbers that nobody’s seen and the testing. At 55 million tests, we tested more than anybody in the world,” he added.

“I have a graph that I’d love to show you. Perhaps you’ve seen it, where we’re up here and the rest of the world is down at a level that’s just a tiny fraction of what we’ve done in terms of testing.”

So it sort of is curious,” he continued. “A man works for us, with us very closely, Dr. Fauci, and Dr. Birx also, highly thought of, and yet they’re highly thought of, but nobody likes me. It can only be my personality.”

Or the fact that Fauci is a raging liberal while Trump’s a staunch conservative.

Just to be clear, plenty of people like the president. As of Wednesday, he boasted a 42.5 percent average approval rating, according to RealClearPolitics. That marked an improvement of 5.5 percentage points from his record Dec. 13, 2017 low of 37.0.

Nevertheless, thanks to the president’s presumably tongue-in-cheek comment about nobody liking him, the hashtags #WhyIDontLikeTrump and #NobodyLikesMe began to trend among the echo chamber leftists who dominate Twitter.

In his remarks Tuesday, the president did aim some criticism at Fauci.

“I haven’t always agreed with him, and that’s, I think, pretty standard. That’s okay. He did not want us to put up the ban to China when China was heavily infected very badly, Wuhan. He didn’t want to do that, and I did and other things,” he explained.

He added that overall, the two get along fine, and he’s followed most of Fauci’s recommendations.

“I get along with him very well, and I agree with a lot of what he said. So it’s interesting. He’s got a very good approval rating, and I like that. It’s good, because remember, he’s working for this administration. He’s working with us, John,” he said.

“We could have gotten other people. We could have gotten somebody else. It didn’t have to be Dr. Fauci. He’s working with our administration, and for the most part, we’ve done pretty much what he and others, Dr. Birx and others who are terrific, recommended.”

So again, if the majority of the public likes Fauci, and the administration has been mostly following Fauci’s recommendations, shouldn’t the majority of the public likes the administration as well?

Ideally yes, but in a world awash in rampant Trump Derangement Syndrome, roughly half of the population will always hate both the president and his administration no matter what he does, even if he one day cures the coronavirus.
